"I'm not so sure that Bella's going to be thrilled about you throwing a birthday party for her," I said uncertainly, watching Alice as she kept her eyes on the road.

"She won't be at first, though I can see that she'll enjoy it once tonight comes," Alice replied, turning the car onto the main road toward school. "Besides, you're only eighteen once after all."

"Well, technically you've been nineteen years old since around the early nineteen hundreds," I teased. "So, more than once in a way."

She laughed. "That's different," she replied, glancing at me with a grin.

We pulled into the Forks High parking lot, where Alice parked Willow's car in its usual spot beside Rosalie's ruby-red convertible.

She hopped out, quickly circling around to my side to get the door for me, and grabbing a rectangular sage-green box wrapped with a ribbon from the backseat — an offering Bella would probably resist at first sight.

Together, we walked side by side into the school, her steps light and graceful, her amber eyes glowing with excitement that made my heart flutter.

As we reached one of the long hallways, passing by heaps of chattering students, Alice spotted Bella with Edward close to her side with one encouraging arm wrapped around her waist.

"Bella!" Alice called, skipping ahead.

I followed, trying to match her pace as we approached the couple.

"Happy birthday!" Alice chimed, giving Bella a quick hug.

"Shh!" Bella hissed, hugging her back as she nervously glanced around, likely hoping no passing students overheard her.

"Sorry!" Alice whispered, pulling away.

"Do I have permission to wish you a happy birthday too?" I asked, grinning.

Bella sighed with a small smile. "I suppose you do," she replied, as I leaned in to hug her which she returned.

As I let go, Alice presented the gift. Bella's face fell, just as we'd predicted.

"I thought I said no presents," she muttered, reluctantly taking the box.

"Well, I've already seen you open it, and guess what? You love it!" Alice beamed. "And you're going to wear it tonight at our place!"

Bella frowned. "For what?"

"For your birthday party, of course," Alice answered. "You didn't think we'd ignore your birthday, did you?"
