We finally talk, a matter of life and death.
Ruth called and asked me to meet her for lunch, at Robins around one, I told her I'll be there and hung up. I wasn't surprised that she wanted to meet up with me, the way she's been asking questions about me.
I finished up somethings I was doing for Parker while he's away, it's twenty to one so I left to meet Mrs. MI6, I got to Robins, and I saw Ruth at a table, I walked over she said thanks for coming sit down she ordered a drink for me, water chilled with no ice. I didn't ask her how she knew that, one thing I learned is not to drink what someone ordered beforehand.
I signaled for the waiter and told him I'll have iced tea, Ruth chuckled as she drank her white wine, I asked her so what's this about.
I like that in you James you go straight into it, that's fine, I'll be frank, I know who you are and what you really do for the group, I also know that once you're in you can't get out. Let's make something perfectly clear I don't want Dyland hurt in anyway, and if he is you'll answer to me.
Ruth, I understand what you're saying, and I also know who you work for, we both want what's best for Dyland, and I'll say this if anything happens to Dyland or my mother, because of you let's just say we won't be having lunches like this, I'm sure you get what I'm saying.
Ruth said she does, the waiter came back with my tea, and we ordered, I asked her how she got into MI6, I thought one had to be British. Ruth said she's sure I checked up on her and I know she was born in London, I did ask her did she kill her husband, she said no the IRA had him killed, better them than her. She married him just to keep him safe, unfortunately she couldn't.
I said it must've been hard pretending to love him, she said who says she was pretending, I thought to myself, damn she's not as hard as she pretends to be. Our food came and we ate and talked some more, Ruth knew about me pretending to be Chris's husband, and even about when she died.
She told me we're in the same business, only she has more kills than I do, so don't underestimate her, she said she has to get going, I asked her one more thing, and that's why she's questioning my husband about me.
James, I wanted to know if he really knew what you did for a living that's all, in a few days I'll tell him we changed our minds about that charity at least for now, he told me since we're sort of family if I needed to ask him something get it straight from the horse's mouth. I said I will and from what I've been told the mouth isn't the only thing part horse.
I see that you've been talking to Rene, she said let's just say she's had her baby sister watched, she told me to remember what she said about Dyland, I told her to do the same, she got up and walked away, the check came I just laughed as I paid it and left.
I went back to Alexanders and stopped in to see Cece, he said he was just thinking about me, he kissed me and said it seems that he and Dex will be working late on that deal I got, I asked is it the Hart deal. Bae said yes, I asked him should I hold dinner, he said he doesn't know how long they will be; his phone rang he said he has to take that call, I kissed him and left his office.
I went down to security and looked over something's, since I'm doing Parkers job while he's gone, everything is fine, I went back upstairs and called Dyland, he said he was just about to call me, I asked him what's up, he said mother and Robert flew to New York, Rene went with them and he doesn't know where Ruth is, so can we have dinner with him. I told him it will be just me; Cece has to work late.
Come to my house and I'll put some steaks on the grill, he said cool I told him around six, he said he'll be there, I hung up. I called Liz and told her not to cook dinner, I'll put some steaks on the grill, she said she wasn't going to cook, she's having dinner with her sister, but she'll make side dishes if I like. I told her to do that, and I hung up, I often wonder who works for whom in that house.
Later I left the office and stopped off and got the steaks, and went home, Liz said everything is ready and she's leaving now, I told her to enjoy her evening, she said she's not going to be with a man, only her sister telling her about a man, she left.
I went into the kitchen and put the steaks in the fridge, and I went upstairs to change, afterwards I went back downstairs and started preparing the steaks, I know Dyland likes his well done just as I do mine.
I went outside and put the steaks on the grill, afterwards I went back into the house and poured me a glass of wine, something I don't normally do, but it relaxes me. Dyland arrived and he asked could he have some, I told him he has to drive home, so no.
James, I can stay the night, and it's just one glass, he told me to wait until dinner, while the steaks are cooking, we can play video games, I told him I haven't beaten him in this game so let's go at it.
I beat Dyland twice at this game, I went outside and checked on the steaks there ready, I told Dyland we can eat outside, he said cool, we did, and I let him have one glass of wine. We just talked about what's been going on with him, he told me it's the girls, they're all over him since he broke up with Ashley, I told him they would be.
I looked up and Ruth is standing in the doorway looking at us, Dyland saw her too, Ruth came out, Dyland told her don't get mad he only had one glass of wine, she said she's not, she came here to speak with me. We went into the house; I asked her is it another warning.
No, James, I'm just going to say it, there was a plane crash, there were no survivors, my father and sister are dead, and your mother, I'm sorry. I'm going to go out to Dyland and tell him, James said we'll both tell him.
We went outside and Dyland saw the look on our faces, he said if Ruth got on me about the wine, he didn't have to drink it, I told him it's not that, Ruth just said it our parents and his sister died in a plane crash, she walked up to him and hugged him, Dyland broke down and cried.
It hit me that my mother was dead, tears went down my face but not Ruth's, is she that hard of a person, Dyland got up and hugged me crying like a little baby, I just held him. Cece came out and said we already know it's all over the news, he came up and held me.
Ruth said she's going to take Dyland home, Cece said there are news reporters in front of their house, he saw them on the way here, I told Ruth they can stay here. She said Dyland can stay he needs me; she'll deal with the reporters she hugged Dyland and left. What she didn't know is I need him as well, we went into the house and watched the news, Dyland didn't say anything, my phone kept ringing, Cece answered it for me it was calls from Parker and the Alexanders, I didn't want to talk to anyone but Cece and Dyland.
He fell asleep, I got a blanket and put it around him, I just watched him sleeping, I told Cece I'm wondering what's going to happen to him now that his parents are gone, will Ruth take over his care. Cece said if she doesn't, we can if I want to, I told him I do, but is he sure about this, he said he loves Dyland so yes, we just have to see if they left a will and see what it says about who takes care of Dyland and go from there. After that night Dyland stayed with us; we didn't hear from Ruth for a few days, maybe she was trying to find out what happened. I hope it wasn't because of her work that this happened.
Days later the bodies were brought back to Savannah, and we had their funeral, Dyland didn't say much, I was scared for him, that same day the will was read, Dyland and I got mothers money, we split five hundred thousand dollars. That was a shock to me that she would leave me anything, he and Ruth shared their father's money and the house here and in Spain, as for his care it went to Ruth since Rene is gone, and mother wanted me to help with his care too.
Ruth and I agreed that I would take custody of Dyland, sense my work is more stable and I have Cece to help me with him. She told Dyland she loves him, and it would be better for him to stay with me, and she will come to him anytime he needs her, they hugged.
A few days later Ruth left and now my life is going to change, I don't have a lot of memories about my mother, my brother will have to tell me more about her, and now Cece and I are parents of a sixteen-year-old teenager.
I thanked Cece for what he's doing for us, a lot is going to change for him as well.
