As the preliminary introduction practice began, all of us took our places. The candidates were shouting out their countries and it was an exciting experience to be a part of the 72nd Miss Universe. I was previously Miss Supranational Thailand and now I am competing for the second time. While I am not giving my 100% at this stage, I am determined to perform to the best of my ability in the finals, just as my team and I have practiced.
As I looked around, I suddenly spotted Miss Priya, the President of MUT, with Justin and Somsak. I started feeling nervous because Miss Priya was counting on me to win the third crown for Thailand, and I was determined and willing to do whatever it takes to bring home the crown.
I saw her nodding at me with, like, zero expression, which I guess just means I gotta do well, not like crazy awesome, during practice.
I was thinking about my mom back in Thailand, really hoping she's proud, and the fam too. They've always had my back, even when I was doing competitions before. They're always telling me to stay chill and soak up every moment of the activities. It's not like my family's putting pressure on me; it's probably just 'cause this pageant is a way bigger deal.
After Miss Switzerland finished, it was my turn for the introduction. I felt a bit nervous, realizing that since I was almost at the end of the intro, everyone's eyes were on me. The staff and executives were closely watching, and I could sense it as I unconsciously glanced at them. I mean, they were right in front of me!
"Anntonia Porsild, Thailand!"
It was a big sigh of relief after I finished my turn. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but there was this sense of confidence in me that I welcomed. This is exactly what I came here for.
To my surprise, I spotted Dee from afar, smiling and clapping. How cute is that? Her radiant smile actually energized me, making me feel like I did great even in practice.
As I walked away from the microphone stand, my eyes landed on Justin. He was waving his hand so enthusiastically, making sure I could see and join them.
"มานี่สิ!"
In English Translation: "Come here!"
I smiled at him and quickly joined them, noticing that Miss Priya was now raising her chin. That gesture only confirmed that I had done a great job in there but not that great.
"Give it your best shot at the finals, Ann. It might not be the absolute best yet, but you're good to go," stated Miss Priya.
"You and Philippines are cute together!!!" Justin lowered her voice but showed that she giggled, she already knew that we were talking already.
"The Filipino fans are a bit quiet now, unlike yesterday and earlier today. Keep it up, Ann," she added.
I was starting to realize that maybe I should be friends with Dee not just because the organization advised it, but because it felt natural. Honestly, Dee and I are hitting it off, and I sensed that earlier on the bus. We genuinely enjoyed each other's company without putting on a show for the fans.
I just nodded at them and reminded myself a few moments before returning to my spot, as if we were gearing up to practice for the other segments of the preliminaries—the swimsuit and long gown competitions.
After three hours, finally! The Miss Universe organization gave us a lunch break, and everyone is now hungry—I can see all the candidates almost crying to eat, lol. They rush to the buffet immediately on the right side. The thing is, the food here in El Salvador isn't that salty, and I'm not used to such bland flavors because of the more seasoned food in my country. That's why I plan to grab a few bites later before we end our last practice for the day.
