I ran up the stairs as fast as I could, my heart pounding so hard, I thought it would fall out. For some reason, I couldn't leave my mom alone, so I peeked through the corner that oversaw the whole house.

"Who is it?" I heard my mother call out in the distance.

"Who? May I help you?" It started getting frustrated not being able to hear the voices at the other end of the door.

Could this be it? Have they found us? Is this the last day I'll ever see my mom? I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't hear my mom giggle until a few minutes later when she did it again.

"False alarm, honey. Come here, I want you to meet someone." Who could possibly knock on the door to my house at 10 in the night? I thought to myself.

I was so anxious to see who it was, I tripped on the stairs and was sent flying through the air, landing so hard I could barely open my eyes. I finally opened them slightly and saw black leather shoes. I looked up and saw a handsome looking man. Is it wrong to think this, or is it possible my mom pulled a legit guy.

At that moment, I was so flustered and confused that I let my anger take over me.

"This is who you bring? A man? I was actually starting to think that we could start over. Wow. This man has to be fucking rich with a Mercedes out front for me of you think he is going to replace my fucking dad!"

"Enough, John, do not raise your voice at me. I don't know who you're speaking to." She slapped me, but, surprisingly, the handsome didn't notice. "Give me some respect." My mom mowed me down. I looked up into his eyes and slightly, just slightly, I rolled my eyes. I gave out my hand to shake his. This is your uncle, Derrick.

I was so relieved when she said "uncle" that I didn't pick up his name.

"Nice to meet you-?" I started out

"Derrick." my mom finished off for me.

"I'm so fucki-"

"Enough with the cussing." My mom demanded, cutting me off.

"Sorry 'bout that." I said, looking down embarrassedly. While my mom and I are going back and fourth, my uncle was standing right in front of us. My mom goes on, giving me a lesson on Derrick as she speaks.

"He came from Detroit and is going to be staying with us for a while until he can find a permanent place to stay." She pauses for a second. "He's going to be staying in your room. No buts."

"But-" I start, but am cut off by my mom.

"What did I just say? You'll be sleeping on the couch. No negotiations." She said sounding surprisingly demanding. "Get your essentials out of the room, and hurry, he came from a long flight." I hesitated a little, but saw that was a mistake when my mom glared at me and demanded, "Now!"

Derrick and I walk up the stairs and pause before entering my room.

"Sorry, John, about all this. If it makes you feel any better, I can sleep on the couch if you want." I desperately wanted to say yes, but I felt kind of bad for this new dude.

"No, it's fine. Just give me a minute." Fuck, fuck, fuck, what did I just do?

"I'm done." Ugh.

"Thanks, John." Uncle Derrick says, as he pats my back.

Can life get any worse?
