Ray's POV
Emma and Gilda sit across the lunch table from me. Laughing, and chatting, and holding hands. I'm happy for the both of them they deserve each-other. Something about the way they look at each-other tells me they are in love. That's the thing about love, If you look for it, it's so obvious. Gilda brushed something off Emma's cheek and then continues to chat as the bell rings.
I should get a prize for being such an amazing third wheel. Emma has dated a few girls and probably one boy (back in 8th grade before she realized she was a lesbian). 8th grade, wow that doesn't even feel like that long ago. I can't believe in a junior now. In 8th grade Emma dated a boy named Joseph, he was nice but he walked in on Emma kissing a girl in a practice room in the band room. That was a whole fiasco. After that it was Zoey, Juniper, Ruby, Mae, and finally now Gilda. Sometimes I envy her. She finds it so easy to get a girlfriend. I haven't dated anyone since 7th grade, a boy named Cyrus. He moved away mid-year.
I sit in my usual seat in science. Across from a girl named Bailey and next to a boy named Norman. I pulled out a spare piece of notebook paper and started to sketch...a bird sounds nice. Norman sat down next to me. He had been going to school with me since forever. He seems like a nice person but I never talked to him because he hung out with popular pricks. The same ones who bullied me until a year or so ago. I can vaguely hear the science teacher talking but I have no idea what she's saying. My birds starting to look more bird-like (finally). The beaks always hard, I sketch and erase, sketch and erase.
Norman glances over at my paper and then pulls out his planner to write something down. One of his friends (I hate all of his stupid friends) tosses a note at him and he uncrumples it. He reads it and scribbles something down. It flies through the air and lands on his friends table. I think the teacher noticed but doesn't have the energy to care. He gets paid a shitty wage to teach snotty 16 and 17 year olds I don't blame him.
After school I ride the bus home and plop down on the couch. My mom, Isabella, comes to sit next to me. My moms kinda like a genius. And she's beautiful. Her birthday wasn't long ago she just turned 52. She had me when she was 35 and Dad was 40. Her mom (my grandma) started the family business but she's the one who really got it up and running.
"Hey Mom," I greet her. "Ray," she says. Not in a normal way though. In the kind of voice that tells you your parents are about to have a conversation with you. She continues, "I'm worried about your future, you know your grades aren't great and your not really into any sports." She takes a deep breath and sighs out. "I just don't want you to think everything comes free just because you'll get to inherit the company," she explain. I just sit there not really sure what to say. "I want you to fix your grades, I'm hiring a tutor," she states. You have got to be kidding me. "Mom please don't I swear I'll get it under control myself! Like seriously it's not even a big deal," I beg her. She shakes her head. "I know you could fix your grade but I want you to build study habits and keep your grades up. And I love Emma of course but you should try and make new friends maybe this is your way to do that," she insisted. "I don't need a fu- freaking tutor," I sputter. "I'm not discussing this, I'll find you a tutor and that's that, also you'd better watch your mouth," she firmly scolds me.
I sigh and slink off to my room. I think I'll paint and maybe play some Mario kart. I don't have anything to do anyways. Maybe I should work on that one essay. For Mrs.WhatsHerFace? Nah it's due next week im fine.
Norman's POV
I scribble homework answers on my paper. The works easy, just tedious. I need to finish this I'm supposed to go to a book club meeting tonight and then I have to take care of Mrs.Chen's dogs (Mae-Mae and Missy) and cat (Wendell). I can't believe she'd seriously name a cat Wendell. After that I have more homework and I need to email Mrs.Hampton about the essay that's due next week. I should probably work on the essay to.
My mom opens the door slowly and I turn to see her. She smiles at me. Compared to my friends parents she's young at just 34 she had me when she was my age. I can't imagine having a kid this young, it's hard to believe she did. I don't know how she managed especially after my dad. He commuted suicide a when I was just barley 1 so I don't remember him at all but my mom really loved him. Despite my dad being dead I often see his brother, my uncle Drew.
"You want some pizza rolls for dinner? They just came out of the oven. I know it's early but I know you'll be busy," she says quietly. She had a quiet voice naturally though. "Yeah of course," I stand up from my desk and make my way out of my cramped room. It's small and messy because I never have time (or energy) to clean it.
I sit at the table with her. "How was your day?" She questions. "Good, just school," I chuckle. She nods "oh good news!" She sings. I look up from my pizza roles. "I found you a tutoring gig after school on Mondays and Thursdays, just an hour and a half or so. It shouldn't interrupt anything else right?" She smiles. I don't think it should, just adds on something to do. "Nope, not in the way of anything," I reassure her. She smiles. "How'd I end up with such a great kid?" She thinks aloud. I laugh a little and she just smiles.
"How have your friends been?" She asks. "Stupider then ever, the other day James literally face planted into one of the tables in the commons, he was chasing after Everett cause he had his phone," I reply. She laughs, "sounds like your aunt Olivia in high school. She ran Into a sliding glass door head first once." I break out laughing "se- seriously?" I stagger. Aunt Olivia is my moms bets friend since 6th grade, not my actual aunt but I love her like one.
After I my long ass night I lay in bed. Exhausted. It's 1:00 am and I have to get up at 6:30 to get read for and go to school. Sleep deprived and busy, story of my life.
