Heat packs

Louis was a pretty light sleeper at the best of times. Anything and everything could wake him up, so when he suddenly found himself staring at the ceiling, he wasn't really all that surprised.

The room was dark, except for the dappled moonlight filtering in through the curtains. Even at 2am, the faint sound of the city hummed in the background, never truly resting. Maybe that why he loved living here so much.

But tonight there was something else.

A soft whirring noise was coming from somewhere within the apartment and the spot in the bed next to him was cold, vacant of its earlier occupant.

Getting up himself, he threw on some sweatpants and made his why through the apartment. The whirring sound gradually becoming louder, as he eventually found the source.

The warm glow of the microwave illuminated their small kitchen. Olivia stood leaning against the bench, her arms wrapped around herself, as she stared down at the kitchen tiles.

Despite the ridiculous hour, Louis thought she looked beautiful, clad the old Cambridge sweatshirt (now cut to be cropped) and a pair of sleep shorts.

He made his way over to her, approaching quietly so to not accidentally startle her.

"Hey, you ok?"

She looked up at his question, and he immediately noticed the tiredness in her eyes (even more so for someone who was up so late). He also noticed the ever so slight trace of something like pain or discomfort. It wasn't much, but it was there.

Once he'd reached her, he carefully planted himself so his feet were either side of hers. His hands rested on her shorts waistband, thumbs caressing her exposed skin.

"Yeah. Just waiting for my heat pack to warm up."

Glancing over at the microwave, he could now see the item inside, slowly spinning.

That's when it seemed to click. Throughout the evening, she had seemed particularly tired and withdrawn from herself. Not long into their relationship, Louis had soon learnt that this likely meant either one of two things: a) she was about to start her period or b) she'd had a particularly tough day at work. And since he knew she wasn't due soon, he'd thought it was the latter.

But Olivia only brought out her heat pack when she was on her period, the heat one of the few things that actually helped (along with his back rubs of course).

He's eyebrows creased as he looked back at her.

"Oh. But you weren't meant to get it -"

"-for another week. I know." She sighed, shifting forward to rest her head on his bare shoulder.

"Oh babe." he said, slipping his arms the rest of the way around her waist.

Every so often it would come early, and these particular times the pain was always worse. He couldn't imagine how much discomfort she must of be in.

They stayed like that, Louis's hand gliding over her back, occasionally slipping under her sweatshirt, until the high-pitched beeping of the microwave cut through the silence.

Olivia lifted her head from Louis's shoulder, allowing him to reach for the heat pack and bring it in between them.

"Front or back?"

"Front, please."

Louis adjusted the pack and held it against her abdomen, as Olivia wove her hands around his neck, gently brushing her lips against his as she rested her head in the crook of his neck.

They stayed there a couple minutes, leaning against the kitchen bench, letting the heat take effect. But before long, Louis could feel Olivia relaxing, a sure sign she was nodding off.

"Hey, we should get back to bed. You'll be more comfortable there." He whispered against her ear before pressing a kiss to the side of her her head.

Olivia nodded against his shoulder, as she brought her arms back around to Louis's front, using his chest to push herself to stand straight. Louis wove one of their hands together, while Olivia took ahold of the the heat pack.

Wordlessly, they made their way back to bed, getting comfortable under the warmth of the covers. Louis wrapped an arm around Olivia's shoulders, as she relaxed against him. The heat pack now wedged in between his side and her stomach.

As sleep once again took over Louis's body, Olivia lifted her head up from her spot on his bare chest and gently turned his face towards her. He barely got to open his eyes before she captured his lips in a soft kiss.

"Thank you." she whispered.

Louis was a pretty light sleeper at the best of times, but on nights like this, he doesn't mind too much.
