WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES (sorry)
It's mid-April, and I'm contempt with my place on the couch, until I hear a knock at the door. The sound is curt and concise, nothing like Peeta's' sounds like, not like he would be knocking at his own house anyways.
He's not at home because he offered to help his family out at their bakery. He hadn't been back there since he'd returned from the Games. His father would periodically visit, but I had never seen his mother or his brothers.
I sluggishly drag myself out of the living room to answer the door, and when I pull the large oak frame back, I'm met with none other than Katniss Everdeen's cold grey eyes.
"Um.. hi", I awkwardly stutter, completely taken off-guard by her presence.
"Are you alone?", she asks, her voice just as definitive as her eyes.
"Yeah, why?".
"Come with me, I'll explain on the way".
At that, I excuse myself to grab a jacket, then begin to follow Katniss's lead through the district streets.

"So, are you ever going to tell me what we're doing?".
"I'm taking you to the woods, ever been?", she whispers as a respond, keeping her voice hushed and her eyes on the lookout for peacekeepers.
"I've been to the meadow".
"So no".
"I guess not".
Finally, she stops in front of a section of the fence that is hidden behind a row of trees that presumably leads to the woods she had alluded to before. She pauses to look around for a moment, then ushers me under the wire.
After I pass my body through the fence, she quickly follows and takes my hand to lead me through a vast stretch of forest.
"I owe you, for Prim", she finally says, cutting through the silence.
So that's what this is about.
I've known Katniss Everdeen almost my whole life, and up until now, she's never voluntarily spoken a word to me.
"You really don't. I was just doing the right thing because, unlike everyone else in this District, I can".
"Well, everyone knows you're going back into the Games, and, no offense, you need to work on your combat skills. That axe isn't going to get you very far".
"Oh", is all I say.
Up until now, I haven't thought about the seventy-fifth Hunger Games. But now, reality comes crashing down on me.
"I can help you".
"How?".
She doesn't say anything in respond to my question, but rather stops in front of a hollow tree trunk and reaches into the fire that had previously been covered with leaves and twig branches.
Out of it, she pulls a weapon I'd only seen once before, in the training center at the Capitol.
A bow and arrow.
