THE SOFT GLOW OF the morning sun crept into Kaliyah's room, casting golden beams across her face. She stretched lazily under the covers, listening to the faint sounds of the city outside. New York had a way of waking up with a rhythm all its own—honking cars, distant voices, the hum of life just outside her window.
She grabbed her phone, squinting at the screen. No new messages, but a few missed calls from last night. She'd check them later. Tossing the phone onto her pillow, she rose from the bed and threw on her silk robe before heading downstairs.
The scent of breakfast hit her before she even stepped into the kitchen—pancakes, bacon, and the unmistakable aroma of fresh coffee. Her mom was at the stove, singing quietly along with the music playing in the background. The calm vibe was a welcome change after all the craziness of moving in.
