I'm on Kauai and in Wailua. I'm headed to the inn right now. U there? Will be there in 2.
I stared at my phone with wide eyes, and I ran a hand through my hair. He never told me or anyone that he was planning to come here. As I bounced up and was heading back up the beach and back to the inn, I texted, You're here?? What the H dude! Yeah, meet you at the front.
After a few minutes, I reached the front of the inn and smirked in disbelief when I saw Matt standing near the front door to the lobby. He was on his phone as he clutched a black backpack strap, and he looked up when he heard my footsteps. "Hey, man!" he said with a smile, and we went in and bro hugged.
"Yo, what the heck are you doing here, man? And how did you know exactly where to go?"
We came out of the hug and he shrugged. "We all planned this trip, so I knew exactly what was happening and where. And I guess I just wanted..."
I laughed when I realized it. "Melissa. You're out of your mind."
He sighed through his nose as he slid his hands into his board shorts. "This is way worse than Peyton, Milo. I mean... yeah, Peyton and I worked together for a whole season, and we both crushed on each other, but... when I saw Melissa, it was if Cupid hit me with a truck instead of an arrow. I know she likes that bellhop guy, but... Man, yeah, I'm out of my mind."
"I seriously have to applauded your bravery and balls. You know that Lila's not a fan of you going after her teen sister."
"I know, and I was hoping that..."
"To convince her? She heard everything you said to Melissa that time in the lobby, you know."
His slightly-slanted brown eye widened. "Wait, really? Then she knows everything! She knows that I would paraglide over the Atlantic if it meant that I could see Melissa again after Hawaii... and after she turns eighteen."
"Just what do you expect to do here, then? Talk? That's what phones are for, you know."
"I had to see her in person after avoiding her for a few days."
"And you couldn't wait until after they're back tomorrow night?"
He huffed through his nose again and gave me sad, desperate eyes. "C'mon, man... You know how I feel since you have Lila. You came all the way here just to see her."
I nodded. "Okay. You have a fair point. But I'm just worried for you, bro. Lila's like a mamma bear with Melissa."
"I know, so... will you go with me to the house they're staying in?"
"Sure man," I said and slapped his shoulder a few times like guys do.
We walked into the lobby, kindly greeted the middle-aged lady at the desk, then headed out to where the houses were. The sun was completely set now, but left a gold glow near the horizon, so the palm trees were completely shadowed against it. The complex of houses we walked through had lights on tiki torches, lighting the whole area.
"You know, you could've told me that you were coming," I said. "Or you could've hitched a ride with me in the helicopter."
"I thought about that, and I was about to ask, but you were already gone. This was a spur-of-the-moment thing that I decided to do like an hour ago. But, yeah, I could've texted you when I decided for sure to go."
