I avoided Charlie like the plague. I had caught a glimpse of him in class, and his eye was black and blue.
I never got the chance to really look at him though, because every time Jeremiah noticed my stare he'd clear his throat in the seat beside me. He had been getting to class early every morning to sit in the seat beside mine.
I had finally made a new friend in my literature class. Her name is Lydia. She lives down the hall from me. We hit it off almost immediately. We had been eating dinner together every night for a week.
I was on my way to meet Lydia at the dining hall when I bumped into Charlie. Physically bumped into Charlie.
My heart sank to my stomach as I reluctantly looked up at him. His eyes fell to my bag that I had dropped. We both went to grab it at the same time and bumped heads. I scrambled to grab my bag, but Charlie was able to pick it up first.
He held it out for me, and our eyes met as I reached for it. The bruise on his cheek caught my eye immediately. He must've noticed because he said, "I don't think Jeremiah likes me very much." He chuckled.
My eyebrows knit together. "Jeremiah?" I ask.
It's his turn to be confused. "Yeah? Don't you remember him hitting me the other night? I guess I'd understand if you didn't, you were pretty drunk." The tone of his voice was accusatory. As if it was my fault. As if I had hit him. Or drugged my own drink.
"You're right. I was pretty drunk. Off of two beers." I narrowed my eyes at him as I waited for his response.
His face paled and he opened his mouth to say something.
"Hello, love." I heard a familiar voice, and felt a warmth spread across my cheeks.
I spun towards the direction of the voice and found Jeremiah standing behind me. His eyes were hard on mine and his fist were clenched at his side. His jaw ticked when his eyes flashed to Charlie.
"Speak of the devil and he shall appear." Charlie makes an attempt at a joke. However the air remained just as thick as before. My eyes never left Jeremiah. I felt frozen in place.
Jeremiah, however, kept his eyes glued to Charlie. His expression never softened. If looks could've killed, Charlie would've been on the ground by now.
"I think I remember telling you to stay the fuck away from her. But please, correct me if I'm wrong." Jeremiah said lowly.
Charlie grinned. "Yeah I think I recall that. However, I also remember telling you to go fuck yourself."
Jeremiah's muscles flexed beneath his sleeves and I moved closer to him. I placed my hand on his chest. "Jere, please just look at me." I whispered.
His eyes reluctantly shifted to mine and his gaze softened only slightly. I cupped his cheeks in my hands and silently begged him with my eyes to walk away.
He let out a deep sigh and laced our fingers. He pulled me away from Charlie and towards the dining hall.
He was silent until we sat down next to Lydia. Lydia had gotten the entire rundown on my relationship, or lack there of, with Jeremiah. She looked between the both of us and quirked a brow at me. I waved her off, knowing I'd tell her everything later.
—
Lydia and I were both sitting on my bed when Kate came into the dorm. I had hardly spoke to her since our first night here. I had apologized for my dramatics, and she had accepted. But, I could tell something was still off between us.
Lydia and I both shot her a smile and turned back to our books. We had a test the next day, and Lydia had been stressing out over it.
