Missing My Mother So Much

You were a mother, a wife, an aunt,

A sister and a daughter-in-law

You were the funny, caregiving soul

Who never deserved such a withdraw

The next row of cards

Left on the table unplayed

Are the king, jack and ace

Of purple spades

We are grieving for the queen

Of the other heart shapes

As we cross the path of grief

Through the grayscale landscape

A familiar pain was plunged

Into the remaining hearts last year

When the king of blue hearts

Suddenly disappeared

I miss the honeyed tone

Of your voice and your wit

I did not want to lose you, Mum

Not one little bit

I loved you so much,

From the moment after I was born

To the very end of a battle

That left all our hearts torn

Even though I am weighed down

By this additional heartache,

Thank you for the care

Within the deeds done for our sakes

As your eldest bab,

I will do all that I can do

I miss you so much, Mummy

I will never, ever forget you
