"Ready?" I asked Alisha after school. She walked up to me, a frown on her face. "Uh oh. What's wrong?" I asked.
"Ummm. Well. I have to tell you something," she said.
"Is everything alright? What's wrong?" I asked, panicking.
"Yeah! Everything's fine. It's just....well...uhhh..." she began.
"Leesh! Spit it out!" I cried.
"Jason asked me to go with him to the cotillion. He got invited, too. Leah invited the whole soccer team," she told me. I blinked.
"Oh. Well that's fine. You're still going, right?" I asked.
"Wait, you're not mad that I'm going with Jason?" she asked. I cocked my head to the side.
"Should I be? I mean, the whole point of me inviting you was so that you'd be there. If you're going with Jason, then you'll still be at the party. So it's no big deal. We both win," I said. She smiled at me and hugged me. I laughed. "Why'd you think I'd be mad?" I asked. She shrugged her shoulders and readjusted her bag.
"I don't know. I thought you'd be mad that I was ditching you for a boy," she said. I rolled my eyes.
"Please. I think we can act like adults and not stupid teenagers," I said. She nodded.
"This is true," she said. Her eyebrows rose up when she looked over my shoulder. "Uh, incoming. Kyle," she muttered.
"What?" I asked, not completely registering what she said. But it was too late. Kyle was standing right in front of me.
"Hey Mila," he said. My voice got stuck in my throat. Why was he talking to me?
"Uhh...hey...Kyle..." I said slowly.
"I was wondering if you'd like to go to Leah's cotillion with me," he asked. His dark blue eyes were hopeful. I had to look up to talk to him because he was so much taller than me. I glanced behind him at Alisha who nodded her head slightly.
"Sure," I said quietly. He beamed his pearly white teeth at me.
"That's great! I can pick you up at-" he started. I shook my head.
"No, I'll meet you there," I said.
"Oh," he replied. I gave him a small smile because I had sounded a little snappy. He smiled back. "Ok, well. Great. I'll see you there, then," he said. I nodded. He turned around and waved at me before going to his car.
"Uh, what the hell?" Alisha said when he was a good distance away.
"I have no clue. Why'd you tell me to say yes?" I asked. She shrugged.
"Now we both have dates," she said. I rolled my eyes. "Well, Derek obviously wasn't going to ask you. So it's no big deal, right? Leah'll be pissed, though," she said.
"Dammit. I didn't think about Leah," I mumbled under my breath.
"Whatever, Mila. She can get any guy in the whole school. She'll get over it," she said. "Besides, no one can hate you. You're so petite and cute," she said, pinching my cheek. I slapped her hand away.
"Stop that," I snapped, laughing slightly. She smirked at me.
"To the mall?" she asked. I nodded.
"I have to get my homecoming dress from home first. I want to return it," I said.
"Return the memories?" she asked, a hint of a smile on her face.
"Yeah, something like that," I said. She laughed.
