Prologue

I never really believed in the supernatural. It just seemed too out there.

But then it all happened. It just happened so fast. But that's life, I guess. The choices we make define who we are and who we will become.

Our actions leave scars, and it doesn't matter if you're supernatural, because they won't heal.

I couldn't believe this all started just because we went looking for a dead body. I guess that's a bit of karma though, searching for a dead body and all.

I often wonder what would have happened, if that night hadn't played out like it did. Would it have happened the same? Would the dominoes have fallen any differently?

My friends and I aren't like other teenagers; we see that now. Because, we happen to know what's really out there, what lurks in the shadows. Some of us are human, some of us aren't; but none of us are normal.
A normal person doesn't see fangs, glowing eyes and claws. every which way they turn, or people trying to kill them and their friends.

At least, I don't think they do. How would I know, right?

But I'm just afraid. Afraid that something will go wrong. That I'll look away, and when I look back, all my friends will be hurt.

And our problems, will just be a wave, building up until it finally collapses on itself. It has already started to crest, and things feel bad, but I have this feeling that it's going to keep getting worse before it gets any better.

"Riley? Riley, what happened here," Someone says to me. I don't answer, just continue to stare.

The person places a hand on my shoulder. "We need to go. We have to call an ambulance and try and think of a way to explain this to Stiles' dad. Please, Riley."

I get up unwillingly, but my eyes never leave the body on the ground in front of me.

I know what I said before, but, I don't see how things can get much worse than this.

Worse than seeing them laying in front of me.

"It wasn't supposed to end like this," I whisper.
