The following couple of days, both sisters kept being surprisingly close, a sweet combination of longing and reinvigorated kinship. Verina tried her best to give them the due space, taking that opportunity to focus on her potions; if it was true that a trip to Shendu was imminent, she had to have reserves for her patients in Tardeburgo.
With Lara's permission, the two lovebirds would share the new stories regarding the new Princess' identity and her time at the military academy. Apparently, this discovery had been made years prior; the 20-year-old had been bottling up her desires for quite some time, avoiding risky decisions and following her father's directions to appease him. But two factors had drastically changed her position on the subject: Kara's intimate coming out, and Alliome.
The two allied Princes 'Laster' and Alliome had met at the academy in January; a lot of pressure was put on both shoulders, as everyone instinctively compared one with the other, trying to decide 'who would be the best' in every little matter; dividing their crews into two factions, each countries' soldiers cheered on their future leader, as a friendly yet fierce rivalry was silently imposed on them.
Similar ages, similar upbringing, similar goals, and different nations; the perfect ingredients for conflict, comradery, or romance.
As it sometimes happens, that peculiar kind of forced proximity led to a special bond between the two; sharing training, duties, battles and free time together, change felt destined, inevitable. Their friendship strengthened, and in the Sol month, during a special training mission, Elisia's heir confessed his unspeakable feelings; a secret 'homosexual' relationship was born.
In Lara's heart, however, things were a bit complicated. Her fondness for Alliome was of a woman's, not a man's; she lived the first part of their romance filled with guilt, as the secret of her truth twisted like a blade inside her old wounds. The fact that her lover was none other than a Prince didn't make it any less easy.
As the end of their course approached, the great question about 'how things would go afterward' was unavoidable. In a 'make it or break it' desperate move, 'Laster' finally told Alliome about her hidden desire. Surprisingly -for Romiria's 'heir'- that bold boyfriend accepted it easily, as his feelings remained true and his preferences weren't strictly related to one's physical appearance.
The renewed energy from this confession, back in October, and the news from the family's letters of Verina's relationship with her sister had created a new plan: force the witch to change her body with magic. She didn't tell anything about it to her boyfriend, as she prepared herself to fight tooth and nail against that formidable foe, thinking, a bit foolishly, that would be the only possible way.
«So... What happens if Prince Alliome and Princess Lara marry?»
«I... don't know?» said Kara, clueless «There are like, a hundred reasons this pairing wasn't thinkable. I never expected to ponder the political implications of that..?»
«Try.»
«Well... Alliome is an only son, so he is expected to rule Elisia one day no matter the arrangements. Lara could be... Elisia's queen? But that would leave Romiria without a male successor... I could become queen, but now that I have you, and we can't have a heir...»
Verina giggled, hugging her girlfriend on the bed and kissing her forehead tenderly «You underestimate me yet again...»
Kara parted slightly from their connection, to look at her in disbelief. The witch raised her eyebrows with an enigmatic smile, before sticking out her tongue playfully.
«...we can?»
«'Magic', my dear Kara.»
The princess sighed, hugging her lover again, eyes full of tears «Magic seems a bit too convenient, these days...»
Verina laughed «You just don't know what it can do. Possibilities aren't endless, but sure are broad.»
Kara hummed, thinking for a second of the idea of 'being a mother'. As in the past the only way to have offspring would have been to live her life with a man, the idea disgusted her... but if it was with Verina, having cut off the reason for those ill emotions entirely...
«Can we... not call it Naster?»
Verina burst out laughing, caught off guard, as Kara agonized because of those loud sounds directly in her ear canal. «Oh gods, we are ruining Kaster's life bit by bit, us three, aren't we?»
The witch moved on top of her, looking at the young girl tenderly. The princess' cheerful expression turned sweet and falsely innocent, as she felt the mood change into something familiarly intimate.
Verina choked up. She focused on her lips, slightly departed, that always seemed to invite her for pure moments of sweet bliss... and felt the three magic words coming up again, like many times before.
"I love you", she thought. But she couldn't say it. The two of them had yet to exchange that powerful sentence; even though every action of the couple spelt their feelings clearly, not one time they were able to...
«I love you, Verina...»
Kara's watery eyes looked back at her with a calm joy, as those simple words escaped her mouth. She had been trying to find 'the perfect moment' to say it for a long time... but she had realized just in that moment of silliness and promises that every moment was perfect, for a feeling like that.
The witch's tears rapidly left her, dropping on the princess' cheeks; the light of the moon made them shine on her, little trails of stars kissing her skin.
«Oh, you... I was about to tell you the same, it's not fair...»
«Say it, my beloved.»
Verina leaned in for a kiss, as both let their tears flow silently. Finally, she whispered softly in her ear, feeling their hearts jump ecstatically.
«I love you too, Kara.»
