As Verina's fingertips gently touched her skin, Kara instinctively closed her eyes in fear. That soft graze, however, soothed her soon after; that delicate connection made her relax, while the other examined what she had discovered with a concerned look the Princess couldn't notice.
«If I wasn't seeing it with my own eyes...» muttered the woman, moving her hand along those black scales. They were impalpable, and yet moved and escaped her fingers like scared animals. There were three long lines of triangular plates, originating from between her shoulder blades; there were no bumps on her magnificent skin: it looked like a live drawing, a sentient tattoo of serpentine geometry.
«Does it hurt? Is it hot?»
"It sure is hot, Verina..." jokingly wanted to reply the princess, but she resisted the urge. «I just feel your touch...»
The Sorceress inhaled, then keeping her left on the girl's back, summoned a dagger, a small golden poniard. «I'm really sorry, Princess. I have to break the promise I made; this will hurt, just slightly. Stand still.»
Kara, now scared again, braced herself. With the speed of lightning, Verina hacked horizontally, leaving a small cut at the center of that dark beast; as she heard a small cry, she then swiftly reached inside it with the tip of her nails, and extracted one of those scales.
«Do you see it?»
The girl turned back slowly, shaking in fear, a bit hurt. Lady Verina was focusing all her concentration on the object vibrating within her fingers: a large, flat, triangular piece of obsidian, covered in blood. Kara felt weak, imagining that thing inside her body just a moment before.
«Y-yes, I... I can.»
«But you didn't until it was out. And neither did the doctors.»
«...No...»
The witch hummed cheerily, not because she felt any joy in that discovery, but as a sign of victory. Then, she let the scale go.
Instead of heading downwards, as gravity would have wanted, an even greater force, similar to magnetism, attracted it back to the girl's body, attaching to her arm, and getting absorbed back into her skin, just to run across it and join formation with the others. No signs, and no scars: even the cut from before had already disappeared, and just a fine thread of blood remained as proof of the event.
The dagger disappeared in a cloud of sparkles, and the witch licked off the blood drops on her fingers with nonchalance. She was thinking intensely, and didn't notice the really bashful reaction of the still-naked patient.
«Has anything happened to you recently that forced you to repress anger, hate, frustration?»
Kara felt as if that was a tad too specific. One specific image came to her mind: was that the answer the Violet Sorceress wanted to hear?
The girl turned around, facing Verina again. She didn't feel the need to cover again: that woman was now too focused on the case to consider her. «There is something.»
A silent tear fell to the ground, just near another drop of her own blood.
«My father... he wants to arrange my marriage.»
Verina forgot for a moment her quest for knowledge: a sudden wave of sadness and nostalgic memories flowed through her, looking at that sweet, young maiden, vulnerable in every sense, starting to cry with her head low. She felt the sudden desire to hold her, embrace her and cuddle her sorrows away. It hit a peculiar chord that she didn't even remember she had.
«His decision is final. I expressed my dissatisfaction, I explained my reasons, and he... he didn't care. Now he's worried for my well-being, but he wasn't troubled by the lifetime of suffering he imposed upon me... He wasn't concerned with my happiness, two weeks ago. He didn't understand!»
Her anger grew stronger as she talked, and more tears flowed. The voice cracked down a few times, but didn't stop; through the teary eyes, she looked at Verina in desperation and sorrow, noticing how much empathy that unknown woman was feeling, with her cheeks streaked with her same tears.
«Princess... I...»
«I COULD NEVER!» she finally shouted, letting her anger flow, while the black lines on her back frantically moved so much that their tips could be seen appearing and disappearing on her neck and torso, from behind. «You understand that, right?!»
Verina couldn't muster up a response. She wasn't intimidated, although the dark presence that never stopped bothering her from the beginning had been only growing stronger; she was confused by her own emotions.
«You understand, Lady Verina? Because we are the same, me and you, aren't we?!» said Kara, slightly moving forward, resting her right on her heart.
The witch made a step back, even more disoriented «W-what do you mean..?»
Kara made another step, to catch up with the distance lost. «I've seen how you were looking at me. Behind both the murder intent and the graceful pleasantries, I've noticed. When I undressed, it only confirmed my suspicions.»
"Oh no... wait, no, how...?" she thought, retracting again, but finding herself blocked by the oak desk of the King's office, at the end of the room.
«That was longing, and desire. You are attracted by me, aren't you?!» Kara moved even closer, and reached the desk. «Even now, behind these tears, I can see what hides in your eyes!»
Verina choked on her own saliva. She was feeling dizzy, weaker every second. She felt close to collapse.
«You like women, just like me.»
