prologue:::

TEN YEAR OLDS, Tessa and Jess Mariano sat on the floor of their New York City apartment, waiting, though, not exactly expecting, their mother, Liz Danes, to be there for her two kids' tenth birthday. The two kids sat in a comfortable silence, not knowing what to say to the other to comfort themselves and each other. They both knew their mom wasn't going to be there, but it still hurts every year, when she doesn't make it in time, and comes up with some lame excuse the next morning, after her date with a new boyfriend, each year.

Although, as if out of a movie, a miracle happens. The door to their cold, foggy, New York City apartment opens. Standing in the doorway, is a peppy, ecstatic Liz Danes. She had walked in, completely ignoring the looks on her two kids faces; jaws dropped, the two looking at each other for a split second, in total and utter confusion.

Once the two fully get used to her being there, nonetheless, with groceries being placed on the dusty, old kitchen table, they notice she's talking to her them, her two kids, that, on any other day, she would ignore and pretend don't exist. "Hey, guys! Brendon, my new boyfriend, you know him, right? Oh, that's right, you don't! Well, you'll meet him soon", Liz laughed, "Well, he just gave me the greatest idea ever!"

Anytime Liz has an idea, it almost always isn't as smart as she thinks it is, though, no one was there to tell her that, other than her two ten year old kids, who never saw her, and were confused when they did see her.

"Jess, you remember your uncle Luke right? He visited last Thanksgiving!" Jess slightly nodded, having a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. Tessa was sick, and stayed in her room most of the time during Luke's visit, and Luke doesn't come visit often, so Tessa doesn't have many memories of Luke. Luke doesn't have a great relationship with Liz, and he prefers not to visit her, hence the kids' minimal memories and references of said uncle. Liz began speaking again, "Your sister is going to be moving to Connecticut and living with Luke!" Liz turned around from her place at the kitchen table to look at her two kids; jaws dropped, tears forming, messed up heads of hair. It's not like Liz ever helped their kids to brush their hair, it helped them with anything, really. She didn't know what she was expecting, but it certainly wasn't this reaction.

Tessa's jaw dropped. She would've stood up to face her mom, closer, but she couldn't move. She was frozen. This was a new low for her mom. How could she do this? Jess was her best, and only friend. He was her younger brother, she needed to protect him, 'cause lord know Liz won't.
