He sat next to the man, stiff, tapping anxiously on his thigh as he gathered his thoughts.
"How-" Jungkook stopped, rewording his sentence in his mind. "Can you explain to me... what does it mean to be mates? Your mate, as in, the mate to you all?"
Namjoon rubbed a hand over his chin, humming. "Simply, a mateship is a predestined match between people, a connection of compatible beings to ensure the stability of everyone involved. Everyone in a mateship has a role. Seokjin, he... he's our protector, our Sire. I'm the intellectual, I keep the Coven running smoothly on the financial and political side of things. Hoseok, he's a protector in a more general sense. He also keeps our blood storage full. Yoongi's role is difficult to explain, but he keeps us protected and grounded in his own way. Jimin and Taehyung, they're fighters, and incredibly destructive, but they're also the most lovable Vampires you'll meet. They keep us sane. And you, well, I suppose we'll find out your role in the future."
The man gave him a dimpled smile, eyes glinting. "Has that answered your questions?"
"So you all... You all love each other? As in, all of you?"
Namjoon chuckled slightly, looking fond. "We do, but in different ways. The love I hold for Jin is different to what I feel for Yoongi, but it's still love in the end. And I hope you will come to love us one day, a type of love that you feel is acceptable."
"If you had all been so forthcoming like this is the beginning, perhaps I'd be on my way there by now. Or, at least, we'd be civil... friends." Jungkook grouched, unable to stop himself from voicing dissatisfaction with the cards he'd been dealt so far.
"Ah," Namjoon sounded, appearing sheepish. "I admit, we haven't been the most... understanding with you. In fact, I am rather disgusted looking back on it." The man pulled a face, grimacing. "But I assure you, going forward, now that all our instincts have settled as much as they can do in this situation, we will not be treating you as such further."
"What situation?" Jungkook demanded, scrunching his nose.
The man shrugged. "Not all of us have marked you yet. Until then, none of us will settle. And even then, we'll be rather out of sorts for a while yet until you grow stronger. None of us has had to deal with a newborn mate since Tae, and that was..." He trailed off, wincing. "We've all never recovered from that period, I assume that's why our instincts have flared up so viciously with you."
He hummed, leaning back. "You know I won't trust you for a long while, perhaps never, right?"
Namjoon sighed. "We know, and we mourn that, deeply."
=============================
A few days later, Jungkook approached Yoongi, who seemed perhaps the calmest of the Coven in his eyes.
The man was gazing out of one of the bay windows on the second floor, staring at the gardens as they rustled with life.
Jungkook hadn't paid much attention to them in his time here, his mind too preoccupied, but he took a moment to stare out of the window in awe.
"The gardens are especially beautiful in the spring," The man spoke softly, and startled, Jungkook twisted to face him. Yoongi was still facing the window. "The birds are my favourites to watch, although the occasional deer, squirrel or hedgehog is always a treat to see."
"Yoongi," He began, then stopped, hesitant.
"Jungkook." The man greeted calmly, the opposite to him. "I've been eagerly anticipating this conversation."
"You ha- You have?!" He squeaked, and Yoongi's lip twitched.
"I have." He confirmed as if what he'd just said was perfectly normal. Perhaps it was, to him and the others at least. Jungkook still wasn't all too used to the casual magic and foresight they seemed to possess.
