He told you not to worry.
Nix is standing outside the entrance as you arrive, arms crossed and head dropped. You ask them what's wrong and they look up at you, teary-eyed and angry. Shaking their head, Nix simply gestured to the large doors of the Plex.
So, why is everything wrong?
The trek to parts and service is brutal on your healing leg. With only one working leg, you make your way through the building on your crutches, painfully slow and cumbersome. Despite the obvious strain and physical limitation, you press on through the colorful labyrinth.
How can it get worse?
The cold calculating eyes of your employer is luckily a rare sight to you. Nothing good could come from seeing him standing there, waiting for you.
Just what the fuck is going on?
"What's this?" You hopped over, peering into the protective cylinder at Monty. He's strapped down and unconscious. The man stood rigidly beside you. His cold eyes regarded you indifferently.
"It destroyed the one you were in charge of." His face was expressionless, but his demeanor was one of authority and sternness, "Then when its handler came to pull the defiant thing from its room, it attacked the woman."
"What?" You bite back the pained quiver threatening to leak into your tone. While you're certainly deeply struck by what you've heard... Letting it show to the modern-day corporate predator will only make this harder for you.
"It's dysfunctional and should be decommissioned along with the other." Cold and uncaring for all except the expensive 'equipment'.
Pounding painfully in your chest you slide a hand over your heart as his words sink in, eyes widening and brows knitting in anger at the suggestion alone.
"No" Montgomery, a friend, someone you trusted and cared for... being labeled as 'dysfunctional' and effectively sentenced to death. You couldn't accept it.
The man's brows rose in surprise at your unexpected disagreement. He took a step back, his icy glare now filled with something resembling irritation. "I'm sorry?"
Eyes now were narrowed in fury, but at its core, was driven by fear and sorrow. "I said no... No, no, no!" Like the aftermath of a storm, despite how you tried to bottle them, your emotions raged and rumbled. "Your fucking wrong!" You let those feelings crack through your words like angry lightning.
His expression changed from impassive to frustrated as he shook his head at your uproar. Possibly getting a similar earful from Nix. His reply sounded more stern than before, "How exactly am I wrong?" As if fed up with reasoning with a child, the man rolls his eyes and crosses his arms.
If he wanted a child you could give him one. Stomping your good foot into the gritty concrete ground, your tirade continues, "He wouldn't do that! He would never hurt them!"
The office prick only grew increasingly exasperated. He stepped closer to you as if to intimidate you. "How can you say that when it's attacked twice already?" He's practically learning over you and you're sure you can feel his hissed breath on your face.
"Shut. the fuck. up!" You huff, forcing his back with your words as you refuse to buckle under him, "I know Montgomery. He would never hurt them purposefully. He cared about them both; they were his friends."
"I've never brutally killed and maimed friends, but, sure." with a roll of his eyes the man walks over to the computer in front of the cylinder. a handful of items are thrown across the small surface space.
Yeah right, you don't have friends. your bitter mind's supplies. You choose to go with a more amicable, "Go fuck yourself."
Pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration, he sighed deeply. "Watch your language. Before you wind up like Ms. Dee." hands planting firmly, mostly more for emotional support, on the desk as he glowers at you. Harsh icy glare, fixed up, especially for you, not masking the severity of his aggravation.
