It's really hard to try and ignore someone who lives two doors down from you. They also go to your same school. And they also used to be your friend. But not anymore. And you see them in the hallway all the time, whether it's you're walking from Science to Math, or leaving the building, you always see them. This is my case, and here's the story behind it.
Years ago, just before second grade began in 2019, a new family moved on our street two doors down from us. We went to say hello. The mom introduced her kids. One was my age and her younger brother was my little sisters' age. So me and her got to talking a few minutes later but her little brother rolled his dad's power washer over (thankfully without any power source) and we ran away, making our first memory together. The next day we rode our bikes some, and that night I walked outside my house to look at the stars. Then my friend happened to walk outside at the same time and she saw me and shouted my name. She was the most excited I ever saw her when she was around me. I didn't think back then that after that night she wouldn't ever see me like that again. Even though our relationship lasted for a few years, it was still very dim. Sometimes around the same age that we became friends I felt like our relationship was pointless and that made me upset sometimes.
But it's okay. Second graders take things like friendships and relationships for granted, right? Anyways, she happened to be in my same class too. We had lots of fun together until we moved desks and I sat with my "enemy" for the rest of the year. Later in fourth grade me and my friend were back together again. But kids made fun of it and tried making it a romance. This upset me more because we were just friends. One day in Winter a kid put her glove in my backpack. When I found it there the whole class went "Ooh..." and sang the dumb kissing-in-a-tree song with my name and hers in it. I hated the majority of my class for that. That wasn't the only negative thing that happened. A kid accused me of racism when I didn't do anything racist. Oh and by the way, we're talking about fourth graders.
Anyways, next year a little hope shone, and it was through the abandoned Central School just off the downtown area of the village. Abandoned in 2012, the school was closed for ten years. However in mid-to-late 2021 something happened: 3D models and updates were posted on the district website for Central School 2.0. To me it was a blank slate. I was able to forget about that kid who said I was racist when I wasn't and my old class' tricks and move on. Thankfully it was exactly what I'd hoped, and everything went as planned, but then something happened. I still hated people making fun of us and creating all those romances and stuff, but on the night after Christmas, something about how I thought towards our friendship shifted through a dream and little did I know that would change me forever.
