"Pick up the pace, Emilia." Nicole called over her shoulder, running across the road between our town and Shawn's.
I began to walk faster, pulling the cuffs of my winter jacket down past my wrists to cover my hands. It had snowed during school today, leaving a fresh, thick blanket of snow on the ground that was only an inch high. My feet were becoming numb from the lack of protection my school-issued flats were giving me, and the fabric of my socks that was just below my ankle clung to my skin from the snow flying when I walked.
I finally made it across the wide stretch of road, finding myself face-to-face with the old barbwire and chain-link fence that had many broken pieces sticking out. What was the point in putting barbwire in only certain sections of the fences? "Hurry and climb before a delivery truck comes by and sees us." Nicole said as she tugged her hair to one side of her face and pulling her hood above her head. She began climbing the fence effortlessly, again, slotting her feet between the holes in the fences and gripping the icy metal tightly so she wouldn't fall. I began to climb, my skirt flying higher around my thighs.
Nicole jumped down from higher on the other side of the fence, her feet thumping loudly when they came in contact with the hard, frozen ground. I lifted one of my feet and swung my leg over the top of the fence and began to descend. After another minute of climbing down the fence, my feet finally met the ground again.
"Lets go." Nicole whispered, pulling her hood down again because it kept slipping down around her neck.
"And you're sure Shawn will be there again?" I asked, running to catch up and walk by her side. I pulled at my sleeves again, this time out of nervousness.
"Aw, that's so cute that you like Shawn. But yes, he should be there." Nicole said, reaching over to pinch my cheek. Her cold hands made my skin feel like it was on fire before it returned to being freezing cold again.
"I do not!" I argued back. You can't like someone you just met and know nothing about. Maybe I have a slight crush, but I do not like him.
"Okay." Nicole said, shoving her hands in her jacket pockets.
We walked in silence for another five minutes as I watched the air I breathed out turn into a mist from my hot breath mixing with the cool air. My mind began to wonder, starting with the science behind why you can see your breath on a cold day and how the water vapor in your breath condenses and evaporates. Thinking about my breath somehow turned into thinking about how Shawn's breath would feel on my neck. It made me think about when he was breathing in that joint thing and how attractive he looked. My mind began to wonder to Shawn.
"Emilia!" Nicole yelled. I went to turn to look at her while I was walking, tripping over something, causing me to fall onto my hip bone. My now wet school uniform clung to my entire body, leaving me soaked. A scorching pain, almost like fire or lightning, erupted in my hip bone, causing me to scream.
"Em!" I heard Shawn yell, then hearing foot steps running down the porch steps. My eyes were soon clouded when the snow on my eyelashes melted, leaving my vision blurry and my face wet and cold too.
I tried to move, but a pain shot through my side, causing me to cry out in pain again. I began to cry silently, and laid back in the snow as two blurry figures appeared around me. "Em? Where does it hurt?" I heard Shawn ask. I wiped my tears away, rubbing the back of my hands against my eyes. Shawn, Taylor and Nicole were kneeling down beside me, a worried look on all of their faces.
"My hip." I said. Shawn pushed Taylor, who was kneeling next to him, aside.
"I'm going to try and pick you up, if it hurts too much, tell me." Shawn said, leaning down to wrap his arms around my shoulders and under my thighs. I began to shiver, drenched in water now.
