(Emilia's school outfit is the picture above but it's with knee-high socks and ballet flats.)
"Love you, mom!" I yelled, grabbing my school-licensed backpack and heading for the door.
"Love you - Emilia! You better pull those socks up!" My mother said, standing in the doorway while trying to put her earrings on.
I looked down at my socks to find them pooled around my ankles. "Oops. Sorry, mom." I said, laughing. I kneeled down on the floor so my skirt wouldn't fly up, and pulled my socks up to my knees.
"Better." I mumbled, nodding in approval to myself.
"Agreed. Have a good day sweetie." Mom said, her heals clinking against the hardwood floors as she walked over to kiss me. She placed a swift, quick peck on my cheek before I left the house and headed for the bus stop.
I shivered as the harsh winter air hit my bare legs. I pulled my jacket closer to my body, knowing well it still wouldn't help warm up my legs.
After a few minutes of walking in peace, I heard a dog bark from across the street. Turning to look, I found an older lady in black jogging pants with ear buds in her ears. She had a rather large Australian Shepard on a leash in her hand. Once the dog realized he (it looked like a boy) had my attention, he began to wag his tail. I smiled at him, waving my hand at him which made his tail wag faster. The older lady turned and gave me a small smile, waving at me before jogging away with her dog around the corner.
And then I noticed it again. The wall.
My mind began to race with thoughts of what happened yesterday. Nicole said it was because the government thought that crime was due to poverty. And as I began to think about it, I had never heard about any crimes in our town. There was no such thing as stealing, or assault. Not even a DIY, which we learned about in school.
And then I began to think of Shawn. His large, brown, eyes began to cloud my thoughts. I had no idea what Shawn was smoking yesterday, something called a blunt, and even though I couldn't handle it, Shawn looked attractive smoking it. The way his lips slowly rapped around the small object and the way the veins in his neck were so prominent when he breathed in the 'weed'.
Finally reaching my bus stop, I found Nicole, Matthew and Aaron standing in a circle and talking. I quickened my pace, trying to push Shawn and his community out of my head.
"Hey guys!" I yelled, joining in the circle between Aaron and Nicole.
"Good morning, Emilia." Aaron said, shoving his hands in the pockets of his kakis.
"Matthew, the top button of your blazer is undone." I said, pointing to his blue blazer. The boys blazer's were the same color as our dresses with the same white shirts as our's under them, but we have to roll our sleeves up.
Matthew quickly looked down, pulling his blazer together to latch the button into the hole of the other side. "Oh, thanks Emilia."
"Your welcome, Matthew." I replied back.
"So, how far are you guys in your history project?" Aaron asked, fixing his backpack.
Looking at Nicole, I answered his question. "Most of it's done. But we have to finish the board."
"Yeah. Hopefully Emilia can come over tonight and finish it?" Nicole asked, turning to look at me. She winked at me, making sure both boys couldn't see.
"Of course." I said, gulping.
I heard the bus putting on it's breaks down the street at another stop. "The bus is coming. Turn your phones off." Matthew said, pulling his phone out of his pocket and holding down the power button before sliding his thumb across the screen to shut it off completely.
Nicole, Aaron, and I followed suit.
The bus pulled up to our stop, the breaks squealing even louder then before. Matthew and Aaron let Nicole and I on first, just like they are supposed to.
Warm air hit my cold legs, making them feel numb. The bus driver bid us good morning, which I quickly repaid the kind guested with the same remark. Mrs. Karr, our bus supervisor, looked over our uniforms to make sure we were all in order and gave us a small smile before we all sat down in the middle of the bus.
Nicole and I sat next to each other while Aaron and Matthew sat next to each other across from us.
"Ten times warmer." Matthew said, rubbing his hands against his thighs while Aaron put his hands against his cheeks.
We all agreed, breathing in the heated air in silence for a minute.
"I don't know how you wear those dresses and don't die during this time of year." Aaron stated bluntly.
"I don't know how you where those outfits in the summer." Nicole said, raising an eyebrow.
Aaron's eyes went wide. "Touché." He said, before whispering something to Matthew.
"So I was wondering if we could leave right after school?" Nicole asked in a hushed tone.
"What?" I asked, not sure what she was talking about. She raised an eyebrow, nodding her head out the window. I cocked my head towards the bus window, looking past Nicole's shoulder to see what she was talking about. It took me a minute, looking between houses and trees, until I realized she was talking about the wall. "Oh." I deadpanned.
She rolled her eyes, laughing slightly. "Emilia, Emilia. It took you about two minutes to figure that out." She laughed again.
"Sorry. Not used to it." I shrugged. "Sure. We can go after school."
What I really wanted to ask was, 'If we go early does that mean I get to spend more time with Shawn?' But I restrained myself.
"Okay cool." She said, a smile stretching across her face.
"You really like him, don't you?" I asked, referring to Taylor.
She smiled even harder, making her eyes crinkle. "Yeah. I do." She sighed.
I made fun of her by signing and leaning on my hand. "Oh Taylor! You're just so-"
She cut me off. "Shut up!" She whisper-yelled in a playful tone.
We both laughed before feeling the bus come to a complete stop.
"Well this should be a fun day! We're starting STD's in health class!" Nicole said sarcastically.
Matthew laughed, rolling his eyes.
And then she leaned in to whisper in my ear as we stood up to file off the bus. "And you'll get to see Shawn later."
