Gally PoV:
I pull out the brown truck from under my bed. As a Keeper, I have my own room; everyone else sleeps in the hammocks. My room isn't big or splendid - it contains a bed, with a cupboard and a trunk. I have no windows for my room; a few Keepers do, but I am stuck in a middle room.
I keep the key for the trunk on a string around my neck. I slip it off from under my t-shirt and unlock the trunk. There - all organised into rows and columns - are my boats. Each boat is slightly different. For each Glader, there's a boat with their name on. The other boats have names I like - Rosie, Charlie, James. I haven't named this one yet.
'They're beautiful,' Jesse's voice interrupts my thoughts.
'Thanks, I try,' I say awkwardly.
'That one says Newt on!' She points out, with surprise.
'Yeah... I put people's names on them. Don't tell anyone about these boats. They'll think it's weird.'
'Nah, they won't. They'd be surprised that you can do something other than building.'
'I make drink.'
'Alcohol? I don't believe it,' she crosses her arms cheekily.
'Oh yeah?' I walk over to the wooden cupboard, removing the bottom draw. There are glass jars of an almost clear liquid, and they all clink together as I move them.
'Fucking hell...' Jesse's eyes are wide open, 'you're an alcoholic.'
'How do you think my teeth got so bad?' I flash her a disappointed smile. Her lips openly pout, her head tilts to the side. Jesse walks towards me. She tightens her fingers around my lips: moving my head side to side to get a better look.
'You're missing your back teeth...' the words escape her throat quietly. She's not quite as tall as me, but she's not short either.
'I know,' I manage to mumble, 'they broke.' She nods, stepping back. The girl places her hands on her hips and smiles.
'We gonna get shuck-faced or nah?'
~
'I AM A GRIEVER. I'M COMING TO STING YOU!' I have my hands by my feet, slyly crawling over the floor. Jesse stands on my bed, balancing on one foot like a ninja.
'Come at me bro.' She raises her eyebrows. I jump onto my bed, making the floorboards rumble. Jesse's hands tickle me - moving all over my body as if they are running. I can't stop laughing; so I start to tickle her back. Soon, we are both shaking the bed as we tickle each other.
'Stop it! I'm gonna be sick!' She shouts, still giggling. We both stop and take back our breaths. Jesse's body lies next to mine, her head in the crook of my neck.
'I am invisible,' I tell her.
'You are a superhero.'
'I am a soldier.'
'You are a captain.'
'CAPTAIN GALLY.'
'YES CAPTAIN GALLY!' Her hand pats my tummy, not enough to hurt. The door flies open and she gets up to welcome whoever is at the door. I sit up quickly.
'Newt!' She sings cheerily. She is shucked.
'Gally what is this? Some sort of party?' Newt's face is red with fury. Whoopsie.
'Slim it, Newt. We were just having a bit of fun.' I tell him, slurring my words.
'Not too much fun I hope. Come on, Jess, let's get you to bed,' he says. Jesse walks around the bed, giving me a hug. I feel her lips against my ears.
'Night night, Captain Gally. Sweet dreams,' she whispers softly. She walks back to Newt, kisses his cheek, then leaves - stumbling.
I find myself smiling at the closed door.
Long chapter. Gally is just too cool.
