*Astrid's Hut on Dragons Edge*-Astrid's POV- I am sitting on my bed sharpening my ax, thinking of the difference between Hiccup and his Dad and, Hiccup and Gobber. The reason for this line of thought started because of our latest visit to Berk.
*Flashback*
We just landed in the middle of town. Gobber was already waiting with food and water for Hiccup and Toothless. He was amongst the other parents, who were waiting to see their kids again. Hiccup got off Toothless and they both ran towards Gobber. Gobber gave them both salmon and the two ate feverishly before drinking the water that Gobber had. Hiccup hugged Gobber with all his might, Gobber did the same. When they broke apart, Stoick was walking towards Hiccup. I thought that Hiccup was going to hug his father and give him a greeting that was better than the greeting he gave Gobber but instead, Hiccup closed off and stood like a warrior getting ready for battle. Stoick reached Hiccup and did the same. They both nodded firmly before talking like they were strangers being forced to talk. "How is The Edge?" Stoick asked that as if he didn't trust his son to handle his team. "It is doing well." Hiccup said like a soldier giving a report. "Good, Make sure it stays that way. I must get going, carry on." Stock said that like a chief commanding his officer, before leaving. When they both turned around they were instantly more relaxed. The entire trip was basically like this, Hiccup was completely relaxed and happy with Gobber but with his own father, he was like a soldier in front of the first in command.
*End of Flashback*
I finish sharpening my ax and start going to Hiccup's hut. When I get there, I see Hiccup making a new adjustment on Toothless's tail. "Hey, Hiccup. I have something to ask you.", "Of course, mi'lady." Hiccup acknowledged me without stopping his work. Just as he was bringing down his hammer, I asked the question. "Why don't you call Gobber, Dad?", Hiccup smashed his hand and swore to the point it would make Gobber uncomfortable. When Hiccup stopped swearing he looked at me, who was blushing, and finally answered her question, "Why do you ask?", with a question of his own. "Because you and Gobber act more like father and son than you do your own father." Hiccup looked a little tense while he continued his work. "My dad never acted or cared for me like a father. Gobber is the one that filled that role but, I never called him dad because of many reasons. One, he has always been known to me as Gobber, my mentor and parental figure. Two, can you imagine how the village and other tribes would react when they hear that Stoick the Vast, chief of the tribe of Berk, can't take care of his own child but his best friend, who is a simple blacksmith, can. Three, it is also disrespectful to my Dad because he is still alive and well." By the time that Hiccup finished talking, he was done with his work and I was dumbfounded. "Now if you don't mind, me and Toothless are going on a flight." Hiccup put Toothless's tail on and they took off at incredible speeds.
*At Berk*-Third Person-
Gobber was in the smithy, working on a sword, when the door burst open. He turned around and saw Hiccup. He was tense but when he saw Gobber, he slowly started relaxing. "Are ye alright, lad?" The moment that Gobber spoke, Hiccup finally relaxed."I just had an uncomfortable conversation with Astrid. She asked me a question that I had a million reasons for but not a single one is for myself." Hiccup said as he sat near Gobber. The sounds of the sword being sharpened on the spinning stone comforting him. "What was the question, Lad?", Gobber asked, curiously. Hiccup looked away, shyly. "Why I don't call you dad." The next thing either of them knew, the sword that Gobber was sharpening was stuck in a wall. Toothless started making a warbling sound, his equivalent of laughing. "What did ye say, Lad?" Gobber asked in shock, he wanted to make sure he heard right. Hiccup could never lie to Gobber so he told him the truth, "She asked me, why don't I call you dad." Hiccup said quietly and looking away, feeling embarrassed. Gobber sat down in a nearby chair and looked at Hiccup. "And what were ye reasons", Hiccup tells him the three reasons he told Astrid. Gobber got up and hugged him. Hiccup breathed a sigh of relief before hugging back, neither of them noticed the chief of Berk that was standing standing in the doorway the entire conversation. Stoick walked away soundlessly. He still cares for me and my reputation, even after everything that's happened. Thank you Gobber for taking care of my son when I can't.
