Yusuf boarded the plane, his purposeful stride echoing in the cabin as he sought his designated seat. "Yes sir, can I help you?" inquired the beautiful flight attendant, her long hair immaculately tied.
"I'm looking for my seat," Yusuf replied, a smile gracing his face as he presented his seat number to the attentive flight attendant.
"Follow me, sir," she directed. After locating his seat, Yusuf expressed gratitude and settled in beside the window. A seat affording him a picturesque view of the sky and clouds.
Prompting a smile, he thought, later, it would make for a perfect picture to share with Jannah, his fiancée, eagerly awaiting updates.
Engaged for a mere week, Yusuf and Jannah's story was a tale of family arrangement. Jannah, a woman chosen by Yusuf's mother, was more than just beautiful—she exuded modesty and the qualities of an ideal wife. Believing in his mother's discernment, Yusuf embraced the match.
Post-engagement, their interactions were limited, primarily maintained through a long-distance relationship. As Yusuf journeyed from Malaysia to Jordan, where he worked as a lecturer, he envisioned frequent phone calls bridging the gap until their wedding day.
"Ah, I'm sorry, sir!" The familiar voice drew Yusuf's attention. The same beautiful flight attendant bowed apologetically to a bulky man in the nearest seat. A mishap had occurred as she accidentally dropped a passenger's bag hitting his head, eliciting an angry response from the bulky man.
"Can you do your work properly? You want me to get injured before we reach the destination?" he scolded.
"No, of course not," she replied guiltily. "I'm sorry again, sir."
The bulky man, still annoyed, leered at her. "That's all you can say, huh?" His gaze scanned her body.
"I'm sorry," she repeated, her response seeming limited in the circumstances. She felt discomfort with the bulky man's sneaky gaze all over her body.
"It's okay, treat me better after this," the bulky man said with a sneaky smile. The flight attendant slightly bowed and moved on to assist another passenger. Yusuf sighed, feeling a sense of shame for the man's behavior and an unspoken wish for a more modest flight attendant uniform.
As the flight took off, Yusuf succumbed to a few hours of sleep before awakening to the panoramic view outside his window. He captured the moment, planning to share it with Jannah. Browsing through his photos, he paused at an image of Jannah's smiling face adorned with the engagement ring, eliciting a smile from him.
Deciding to visit the restroom, Yusuf inadvertently overheard a distant conversation. A man's voice accused the female flight attendant, of allowing a passenger to flirt with her, despite rejecting him. The woman's voice retorted, highlighting the difference between harassment and flirtation, expressing her exasperation with a touch of sarcasm.
"I'm jealous, Layka. I love you. I don't like other men looking at you like that," the man declared.
"You're ridiculous. So I'm at fault? Why didn't you defend me when it happened? As expected from a man," Layka responded, disappointment palpable in her voice.
Yusuf's exit from the restroom ceased the conversation abruptly, as the two seemingly realized the presence of a passenger. Locking eyes with the female flight attendant, Layka- if he heard it correctly, Yusuf returned to his seat as the male flight attendant, feigning ignorance, continued his tasks.
Sleep enveloped Yusuf until a sudden turbulence disrupted the cabin's tranquility. Panic spread among the passengers, the realization that the plane faced trouble evident. In the midst of the chaos, the man beside Yusuf whispered, "God, I don't want to die," his face etched with sorrow.
"Allahu Akbar."
God save me.
