It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single alpha in possession of a good fortune must be in want of an omega. John Winchester paced outside his wife's study, dressed in his Sunday best and sweating through his coat on the warm Spring day.
"Mary, dearest, I need the carriage to take our pack to town," John called out. "There is an embroidering workshop for omegas, which I am sure Dean, Sam and Charlie would be more than interested in."
The study door creaked open. Mary sitting composed in her armchair, a book in hand, waved her husband in.
"John, you know as well as I that our dear Charlie has no interest in needle point," Mary said fondly. "She is more like to want to spend all day up that oak tree composing ballads for her imaginary heroines."
"Well, that is true, but Sam is a most accomplished young man and excels in all the virtues becoming of an omega," John beamed with pride.
Mary rolled her eyes. "John, Sam is a most adoring, sensitive, compliant boy. As for his 'virtues' in culinary critique, wine tasting, deftness with a needle, musicality and proficiency for a Waltz, they are skills he acquired to please you and conform to your ideas of how a desirable omega must comport themselves. If it were entirely up to me, I'd send him to London to attend medical school with the alphas and betas. His needle work is the finest I've ever seen after all."
"Well, that leaves Dean..." John started to say. He opened his mouth a couple of times but saw his wife's lifted eyebrow. She looked amused by mention of Dean and needlework in the same sentence. She was laughing at John's growing fluster behind her book. "Dean..."
"Unless they are teaching how darning needles could be used to take the eyes out of a target from 30 paces, or hand to hand combat with a thimble, or stitching your own hat into a sort of camouflage for hunting, Dean would not linger in a room full of omegas meekly darning socks or some such," Mary snorted.
John sighed, their eldest son Dean was as far from a model omega by society's standards as imaginable. John fancied he might be the polar opposite of the docile, sedate and seductive standard in fact. Dean had always been close to his alpha mother and Mary indulged him, let him run wild in hunters clothes, taught him to ride a horse, took him on hunts with her. Lately, Dean had taken to binding his scent. John despaired for Dean ever finding an alpha who would accommodate his wild, rebellious ways.
John bowed his head before his astute wife. "There is no embroidering class, I was hoping that driving the carriage around the Milton estate might attract the attentions of our new neighbours."
"I thought as much," Mary offered her hand to John. John came to her side quickly, took her long delicate fingers and wrapped both of his warm rough hands around them. With some hesitation, he bent down and scented her hand gingerly. She smelt like vanilla and tea and beneath that a soft wafting alpha scent signalling happiness. She was not cross with him and his foolish plot, John sighed in relief.
Mary tugged John to sit with her in the enormous armchair that had been passed down through the generations by the Campbell family.
"John Winchester, you are a good man at heart, though at times you play the misguided fool," Mary said, her words gentle and kind to mollify the sting of her critique. "I can feel the callouses on your palms, I know you have worked hard to maintain this little estate and it has flourished under our joint care over the years. Yet, all good things must come to an end, though I assure you not too soon if I could help it."
"Mary, do you ever regret settling yourself upon me?" John whispered. "I have tried to earn my keep, to repay your love, but my greatest regret in this sweet life that we share is that I could not help you conceive an heir. If I had been born an omega, out of our three children at least one would surely have been a true alpha. Dean probably, he has all the makings of one, except for that damned knot!"
