The flicker of the basement light did little to pierce the darkness that had settled around Dr. Jonathan Reed. He sat hunched at his workbench, photos and newspaper clippings scattered before him. Each told the same bleak story - the mysterious disappearance of his younger brother Mikey 10 years prior.
Jonathan rubbed his eyes, bloodshot from lack of sleep. He could still picture Mikey's crooked smile, always brimming with optimism despite their hardscrabble upbringing. While Jonathan had sought solace in science and academics, Mikey took to the boxing ring, fighting his way to a college scholarship. He was the type to lift others up when they were down.
And then he was just...gone. No note, no calls, no goodbyes. The police speculation ranged from a back-alley mugging gone wrong to Mikey simply leaving town in search of something more. But Jonathan knew his brother would never abandon family.
A bitter laugh escaped Jonathan's lips as he glanced over the old "Missing" flyers. For years he had tried going through proper channels - detectives, journalists, private eyes. Always reaching dead ends or unfinished leads. He knew Mikey's case would forever sit cold and forgotten while the world moved on.
Jonathan turned his attention to the newest addition scattered among the old clippings - complex equations and scientific scratchings, the seeds of what would become his life's obsessive work.
"I'll find you, Mikey," he whispered. "Whatever it takes."
A knock at the basement door jolted Jonathan from his brooding. He swept the contents of the desk into a drawer just as the door creaked open. A sliver of light cut through the darkness, silhouetting a figure at the top of the stairs.
"Jon? You down here still?" a woman's voice called.
Jonathan cleared his throat, trying to mask the edge in his tone. "Yeah, just cleaning up."
He could hear the intruder descending cautiously into the gloom of the basement. Soon the bright eyes and freckled face of Elena Monroe emerged. An inquisitive neighborhood girl scarcely older than a teen, but whose curiosity was aged far beyond her years.
She glanced around the shadowy cellar before fixing a sympathetic look on Jonathan. "It's 3am. Couldn't sleep again, huh?"
"I've just been caught up studying," Jonathan replied dismissively. "Lots of research piling up."
Elena tilted her head, clearly unconvinced. Her eyes settled on the antique lamp illuminating the workbench. "My mom used that old lamp to help me with homework when I was a kid. Didn't know you still had it down here..."
Jonathan averted his gaze, a swell of childhood memories flooding his thoughts. He and Mikey huddled around that lamp through many difficult nights in this very basement, finding joy in strung up blankets transforming their space into wondrous forts. It was a simpler time before everything fell apart.
Sensing his withdrawal, Elena gestured to the stack of books tucked in Jonathan's satchel leaning against the wall. "So...time travel, huh? Can't say that's typical Ph.D research."
"Just exploring new frontiers of theoretical physics," Jonathan replied quickly. Too quickly.
Elena cocked an eyebrow. "Come on, Jon. We've lived next door our whole lives. You can talk to me." She hesitated, thinking her words over. "I...I miss him too, you know? Mikey was like the big brother I always wanted growing up."
Jonathan felt that familiar pang of anguish at the mention of his name. Perhaps he had underestimated this girl's perception all these years. They stood in awkward silence until Elena nodded to the lamp.
"I actually came down here hoping to borrow that," she said. "My grandmother is visiting and our power went out. But now I'm thinking...maybe you could use it more tonight?"
