"You're here early?" Whitlock said, getting out of his cab as I was walking up to our building.
I stopped, waiting for him as he shut the cab door and smiled, "You should talk."
It was our last day in the office before the holidays and it was always our busiest time. I knew I was going to be swamped today as was he.
"I've always come this early ever since my wife died. It's just not the same at home anymore."
I looked at him sadly because I knew how in love those two were. He had plans to retire three years ago and travel the world but things changed and Marybeth fell ill and passed shortly after that so he kept himself busy with books.
"Busy day ahead. Will your team be done?" He questioned.
"Yes. I believe so."
Ignoring the stares of a few females that passed by, I unlocked our building and we both headed inside as Whitlock chuckled, shaking his head.
"What?"
"Girls... I wasn't completely ugly, I did alright for myself and ended up snagging Marybeth but everywhere you turn women flock towards you. How are you still single?"
I locked the door again after we entered, knowing Susan would be here shortly to open the place up.
"I choose to be. I don't have time for anyone right now."
That wasn't a complete lie, I chose to be single and to be honest, I haven't met the right one yet. Sure I dated here and there but none of them caught my attention. Girls get two dates... that might sound a little arrogant of me but I wasn't going to lead anyone on if I knew it wasn't going anywhere.
We rode the elevator up to the top floor, going our separate ways and I immediately got started in on my work.
6:45 my cell phone started to vibrate.
Rolling my eyes, I let out a breath before answering.
"Hi, Mom. You're up early."
"I wanted to catch you before you got to work."
I started laughing, "I've been here since 5am."
"Why would you go in so early?"
I started laughing. "The office is shutting down until January second. We have deadlines to meet."
"I suppose. Well the reason I'm calling is because Grandpa Ed was wondering if you were bringing a special someone to Christmas?"
I heard a small knock on my door. Turning to see who it was, I smiled, seeing it was Mae, my assistant and one of the Junior editors on my team. "I'm at work, we can discuss this later on."
She smiled back, placing my coffee down on my desk. I could tell she was about to leave when I held up my finger to let her know it was okay and I needed to talk to her.
