On the long walk to Madelyn's house I started thinking about some things. Like how I already got nervous around her and I barely knew her for a day. Like how Arianna somehow hated her. Among other things like school and my mom. Wait speaking of my parents, my dad was gonna be home this weekend. He had a business trip that caused him to be away but now he can move in with us.
"Are we almost there?" I whined to Madelyn. We've been walking like 10 minutes and my feet were starting to hurt. She didn't answer me the first time so I asked again.
"Yes Keira, we're almost there." She rolled her eyes and laughed. Gosh, her laugh was angelic. "Just like one more block," she added. Oh that's not so bad. Still a long way though. We turned a corner and I saw a huge house. It was like a mansion but maybe a little bit smaller.
"Woah, that's a pretty house." I said in amazement. I've never seen such a nice house. She laughed a little and shook her head.
"Yeah well that's where we're headed." When I tell you my jaw hit the floor, that's an understatement. I mean she looked rich but I didn't know she was loaded.
"How can you afford such a house?" She laughed again.
"I don't, my cousin, Luca's parents do. It was a Christmas gift a few years back." Someone can afford a whole mansion as a Christmas gift??? That's unfathomable. She took out a keycard and held it up to a card reader at the door. It turned green and a lock clicked.
She opened the door and held it open for me. I walked inside and wow. It was even nicer on the inside. It had a chandelier hanging in the middle of an open room that we walked into. To our left was a spiral staircase leading to all the floors above. And to our right was a large room that looked like a kitchen, dining room, and living room all in one. She lead me up the staircase and down the hall. We walked into a bedroom that was bigger than my entire apartment.
"Hey cuz, your mom made dinner. Oh who's this chick you brought home?" A guy who looked around my age burst through the door.
"Hey Luca, this is my tutor and friend, Keira. Also tell mom that I'll be right down." She reacted as if bursting into rooms like that was normal. I watched Luca leave and turned back to Madelyn.
"He seems pleasant." I said sarcastically. She laughed and walked towards a drawer near her desk.
"Usually he is, he's a ladies man though." I think she meant he was a player but I could be wrong. She pulled out two pencils and like 10 pages of lined paper. "You think we'll need all these?" I giggled but nodded. Considering this was math I figured we'd need a lot of paper.
"Do you have a calculator? If not I'll pull up the one on my phone." She rummaged through the drawer some more and eventually pulled out a golden calculator that looked like it cost 100 bucks. She came and sat down and opened her computer.
"I just need help with like these 5 problems." She said smiling. I raised an eyebrow and laughed.
"Madelyn, there's only 5 problems..." She nodded and laughed. Suddenly we heard a knock at the door.
"Come in?" Madelyn said confused. The door opened and in came Luca. But he was wearing a suit. He also had a rose in his mouth like those cringy high school movies. Did he seriously just leave the room to do that?
"You ladies alright in here?" He asked smirking. Oh how nice. Madelyn scowled at him and he awkwardly laughed but played it off.
"Luca, we're trying to study. Not to mention I don't think you're wooing our guest with your old methods." I had to suppress a laugh. He looked taken aback and frowned. Well she was right, he was definitely not making me blush. Granted, I'll admit he did look a little bit attractive but I would never date him. Plus, Madelyn is way prettier.
"Sorry- are there any extra cookies?" I tried to let him down softly but she wasn't making it any easier.
"Let's go check, together." She put emphasis on the last part and made eye contact with her cousin when she did. He rolled his eyes and walked out. She stood up and grabbed my hand to pull me with her. We went down the stairs and through like 8 rooms until we went into one of their kitchens.
"It looks like there's still plenty, mom can my friend have one?" The woman turned around and smiled.
"Oh Madelyn, of course she can. Say, what's your name sweetheart, I don't think I've seen you before. Madelyn rarely ever brings friends around these days." I laughed and tried to hold a conversation with the lady but it was mostly her asking me questions.
"Thank you for the food, Mrs. Ceries." I thanked her politely and followed Madelyn out but not before hearing her mom say,
"Ah, call me Mellisa." I smiled and shook my head. She seems so friendly. Madelyn was lucky to have her. Next, she dragged me into a living room with a tv and like 4 tables. She settled down on one of the couches so I sat down beside her. I tried only sitting on the corner, I didn't want to take up too much space in their house.
"Get comfy, we deserve a break after all that math. You know those two problems were a strain." I laughed, like really laughed. I swear the whole house heard it. It wasn't even that funny but I liked Madelyn's jokes. She smiled and reached across the table to grab a remote.
"Anything in particular you'd like to watch?" I shook my head as she flipped through channels. Until someone plopped down on the couch right in between us.
"Luca, move. She doesn't wanna date you." He sighed and rolled his eyes.
"You don't know that." He smirked and winked at me. She looked upset at this. She punched him not so lightly in the arm and he got up rubbing the area she hit.
"Gosh, I'm leaving. Calm down." He said while walking out. I wonder what made her so mad. I'll make a mental note to ask later.
"Sorry about him, he's an idiot." I laughed again and said it's fine. She finally settled on some reality show and we sat watching it for a while.
I checked my watch and it was 9:06. Oh no, I definitely have to go.
"Oh crap, I'm gonna be way late getting home." She looked over and checked the wall clock.
"Don't worry about going back out at night, it's a long walk you could get hurt. Stay over and just text your mom." Hm, that wasn't a bad idea I guess I could do that. So I pulled out my phone and texted my mom.
Hey mom, I accidentally lost track of time and I'm going to stay at my friend's house so I don't get kidnapped or something walking back.
I hit send and put my phone back in my pocket. This'll be a fun night.
