Takanobu Aoki never really liked volleyball.

He joined the club just to join a club, because his parents were breathing down in his neck and telling him that he couldn't just not be in a club, because what kind of life was that? Joining the volleyball club was a thing he did thoughtlessly. He could care less who the Little Giant was or what the perfect block was like or why they needed the view from the top, but for some reason, those were the kind of people in the middle school volleyball club. All his classmates seemed convinced that volleyball was the center of the universe, and soon all their lives were volleyball.

And as far as Takanobu was convinced, a life about volleyball was one he did not want to pursue.

After all, the King of the Court, Tobio Kageyama, a genius setter who made his entire life about volleyball, became so arrogant his own teammates betrayed him in the middle of a match, and then peaked as a middle schooler. That was what happened when you let volleyball, or anything really, consume your life. You end up with none of it.

That was how it worked.

And Takanobu swore to himself he would never became like that.

Despite that, somehow he found himself at Karasuno High School, the same high school Kageyama attended, at the start of April. And the only reason he was going here was because the school was close to his home, and because the volleyball program here was apparently really good now.

The irony.

"What are you doing?"

Takanobu was sitting in the grass, leaning against the wall of the gym. Looking up, Takanobu saw a freakishly tall blonde who wasn't even smiling, despite the fact that Takanobu was a first year that he could recruit. "This is where the volleyball club practices, right?"

"Are you dumb?" he asked back instead, his question half a scoff and half an insult, but one hundred percent rhetorical. Takanobu was pretty sure it was rhetorical, but before he could decide on an answer, a short redhead at the edge of his vision nearby caught his attention.

"Tsukishima, what are you doing with the new kid?" He looked like a middle schooler, since he was even shorter than Takanobu, who was already too short for volleyball. "Bakageyama is more helpful than you when it comes to new members!"

"I am always superior to the simpleton king," the blonde, Tsukishima, said, suddenly offended. Takanobu, bored, stood up and dusted himself off.

"Sorry to bother you, senpai. This isn't the volleyball club."

"No, this is." The short redhead jumped up in the air, and Takanobu frowned. The redhead had a good air time. Maybe Karasuno did have an impressive volleyball program. "Hi! I'm Hinata! I'm co-captain with Tsukishima here. Bakageyama is vice captain, sort of."

"Sort of?" Takanobu asked, but his voice was drowned out by a really tall raven shouting, "Oi, don't call me that!"

"You guys!" A blonde girl ran up to them, standing near the gym entrance. "Don't scare the new recruit." She looked at Takanobu now and smiled. "Hello, I'm Yachi, the team manager. Who are you?"
