The room was dark, and Jake struggled to figure out where he was. His hands were bound to a chair, and his feet were tied together. Panic filled his voice as he exclaimed, "Hello!? Help me!"
Where was he? The last thing he remembered was walking home after his argument with Emily... and then he remembered being grabbed suddenly by an unknown person. His eyes strained to focus in the darkness, but eventually, he managed to make out a figure in the shadows. They approached Jake with a calm yet aggressive stride.
Eventually, Jake could make out that the figure was wearing a mask to cover his face. Jake felt fear but also curiosity hiding in his expression. "Who are you?! Why did you take me?" he demanded.
"Quiet, boy, you're making quite a racket," replied a raspy yet strangely familiar voice. Jake tried to place where he had heard that voice before.
"You are a special guest here in my office, and I expect you to behave," the voice continued. Suddenly, the lights flashed on, and Jake found himself stunned. He was tied to a chair in Principal Xavier's office!
"Mr. Xavier?" Jake asked quietly, and the figure took off his mask, confirming his identity. A sinister grin appeared on Mr. Xavier's face, sending shivers down Jake's spine.
"Don't worry, I'm not giving you detention," Mr. Xavier laughed with a comedic yet evil tone. "Why am I here?"
"Calm down, Jake. I'll tell you everything... before I finally end your stupid existence!" These words shocked Jake. Why did Mr. Xavier want him dead, and was he involved in the murders?
"I would never have done this in such a sloppy way, but your discovery of Zack's diary left me no choice," Mr. Xavier began, his voice filled with a mix of frustration and resignation. "You see, Jake, this has been my plan for the last five years - to cleanse Crestwood of what I consider tainted blood. But over time, I started making mistakes, small ones but enough to give the police clues. Fortunately, they never figured it out. However, I needed another approach, and so I found Zack, my willing apprentice, who agreed to help rid the town of the 'dirty blood.'"
Mr. Xavier began to pace as he shared the details with Jake. "What do you mean by 'dirty blood'?" Jake asked, his voice stern.
Mr. Xavier stopped and turned to face Jake. "Well, people like you, Jake, with backgrounds that tarnish the purity of our town. Your brother selling drugs to minors, your father's alcoholism and laziness, and you... I haven't seen you do anything, but I can't have anyone with tainted blood in my town." His words carried a chilling conviction as he revealed his twisted ideology.
"You are sick! What about Harmonie? Did you kill her? What could she have possibly done to be 'tainted blood?'" Jake's voice trembled with anger and disbelief.
Mr. Xavier sighed deeply. "Harmonie didn't do anything, exactly," he admitted. "But she started clouding Zack's judgment. He began planning a future with that girl, and I knew he would abandon our project. But Zack... Zack is made for this, and to save him, I had to kill Harmonie myself. It was just a harmless threat to show him that I am the only one he can trust."
Jake was too stunned to speak. Mr. Xavier had killed Harmonie to keep Zack under his control, and it was sickening.
"And what about Lidia? Who killed her?" Jake asked quietly, his voice shaking.
"That was Zack," Mr. Xavier replied. "His very first kill after I had hired him. After that girl forced him into doing what he did to Emily, sweet little Emily. He messaged me and told me what he was going to do, and I, of course, supported him."
"But Zack did it in any case! He kissed Emily; he could have just ignored Lidia's taunts!" Jake's anger flared.
Mr. Xavier chuckled darkly. "Ah, well, he wanted a little fun. The kid isn't all too right in the head. I mean, he's doing the job for me, isn't he? This way of life isn't for the sane."
"I'm glad you admit this is absolutely insane!" Jake exclaimed as he struggled to loosen the ropes around his wrists.
"So every murder since Lidia has been Zack?" Jake asked as he continued to struggle against his restraints.
"Yes, except for Harmonie," the principal replied calmly, eyeing Jake's attempts to free himself. "Zack is an unstable, crazy kid who loves the feeling of the knife going into skin. And I can't blame him; it's an exhilarating experience." As he spoke, he pulled out a long silver knife, its menacing gleam catching the office light. "But you, Jake, I'll have fun getting rid of myself now that Zack is most likely never getting out of prison. And if I get arrested, so be it. I'd be glad to get rid of you and then live the rest of my days in a cell block, knowing you are no longer tainting this town."
Jake struggled as the principal rushed at him with the knife, his sinister grin sending chills down Jake's spine. But Jake had a moment of opportunity. He had previously loosened his feet and, in a swift move, kicked out at Mr. Xavier's chest, sending him tumbling backward.
"You little rat!" the principal shouted, scrambling to his feet and rushing at Jake again, only to trip over his own feet and fall. In the process, the knife got lodged into Jake's arm, causing him to cry out in pain. He knew he had to break free now to survive.
With determined effort, Jake finally managed to slip his grazed and bruised hands out of the scratchy rope. He bolted for the door, but it was locked. Mr. Xavier had quickly recovered and rushed at him once more, knocking Jake to the floor. Jake's instincts kicked in, and he grabbed a keyboard that had fallen during the earlier struggle. He swung it with all his might, smashing it into Mr. Xavier's face. The principal let out a howl of pain, clutching his injured face.
"You bastard! I'll kill you!" Mr. Xavier roared in anger, his plan unraveling before his eyes.
In a moment of desperation, Jake's eyes locked onto a key hanging around Mr. Xavier's neck. It was the same key from Emily's dreams, the one that must unlock the office door. Jake's heart pounded as he reached out and snatched the key just as Mr. Xavier swung the knife again, narrowly missing him. Jake couldn't fathom why the principal seemed so unbalanced-perhaps he was drunk?
With trembling hands, Jake inserted the key into the lock and turned it. The door to the office swung open, and Jake's relief was palpable. He bolted out of the room, with Mr. Xavier in hot pursuit, still clutching the knife.
Cornered and with no escape in sight, Jake's heart raced as he stared at Mr. Xavier, who was advancing on him with a chilling grin. The dimly lit hallway felt like a prison, and the walls seemed to close in on him.
"Nowhere to run...your time has run out," Mr. Xavier taunted, his voice dripping with malevolence. Jake's mind raced as he desperately searched for any way out of this dire situation.
