86 Working Hard Through the Night
He Yulan was dumbstruck as she watched from the side.
She knew better than anyone else how strict her mother-in-law was. She had never seen her mother-in-law being so kind to anyone, but now she was so happy because of Su Wen’s coaxing.
She must have been blind in the past to think that Su Wen was stupid, ignorant, and selfish!
With such a smart sister-in-law, it was a problem whether her brother could marry Su Xiu.
The people under the three mulberry trees dispersed as the sky turned dark. It was time to go home and sleep. They still had to get up early to work tomorrow!
Little sister Su and Su Xiu came looking for Su Wen because Su Wen did not return. So, they helped Su Wen leave. When they reached the door, Su Wen felt refreshed and steadily walked into the house. Little sister Su, who had been secretly wiping her tears, was shocked.
“Big sister… Big sister, you’re alright?”
“Of course I’m alright,” Su Wen explained the whole situation, and finally reminded them, “we must learn how to adapt to the situation and be flexible.”
The two sisters stared at Su Wen with admiration and enthusiasm. They would have taken notes if they had a little notebook with them.
Su Wen thought, “I’m good at brainwashing.”
…
After Su Wen covered the gap in the kitchen door with a piece of cloth at night, she stayed up all night to make the cake. This time, she planned to work through the night to finish all the ingredients. She asked Su Xiu and Su Qing to borrow the donkey cart from her neighbor, Old Mr. Yu, to sell it in the county.
Old Mr. Yu was from one of the village households with no income and no children. The old couple relied on each other and usually kept a low profile in the village. Their days were difficult, but they never asked the brigade to solve it.
The donkey was Old Mr. Yu’s precious baby, and he took good care of it.
The old couple was old and couldn’t walk far or do heavy work, so they could only rely on the donkey cart.
After Su Wen had borrowed the card, she rewarded him with two pieces of cake. The old couple were old and had weak teeth, so the cake was just right for them.
When Old Mr. Yu saw the cake, he agreed without a second word and asked Su Wen to come over tomorrow morning to get it. However, there was a condition. He wanted her to give him back the cart on the day they borrowed it, no matter how late it was.
That was not a problem. Su Wen would have to return it even if he didn’t tell her to.
After spending all night, Su Wen was so tired that she felt dizzy. But her hard work paid off. That night, she made six baskets of cakes. They were not heavy, but there was quite a lot of it. During this period, Su Xiu and Su Qing got up several times to help her, but she rejected them.
They had to leave early tomorrow morning, so that they couldn’t stay up late.
She would sleep at home the next day.
When it was daybreak, Su Qing went to get the donkey cart as promised.
“Do you want me to go with you?” To be honest, Su Wen was a little worried. Even if she was so sleepy that she couldn’t stop yawning, she couldn’t let go of the thought of letting her two younger sisters sell things alone.
