"Owen, what do you like?" I asked the little kid about the toy he chose; it has two colors, blue and green.
"Hmm, you chose Iris. Alam mo naman 'ata yung favorite color ko e," he said while enjoying a lollipop.
Despite a 2-year age gap, Owen and I became friends since our parents are friends too.
"Happy 6th Birthday, Iris!" Owen greeted me, holding a gift behind him.
"What's that?" I pointed to his gift.
He revealed the present, and to my surprise, it was a guitar. He knew I loved playing string instruments.
"Thanks, Owen!" I expressed my gratitude.
Years passed, and as we grew up, I couldn't comprehend the feelings that developed between us.
"Why?" I asked confusedly.
"I don't know either, Iris," he replied, revealing his imminent move to France.
"How about your dad?"
"He's staying here, running for Mayor."
"But what about us? Our friendship? We can still contact each other, right?"
"We can still contact each other, Iris, i promise." he said, avoiding my gaze.
To: Iris
Sorry, I didn't get to say goodbye before leaving. I hope when I come back, we'll still be friends. I'll miss you, Iris.
This was the message he left with his dad before departing.
"Hoy Dovina, nag-s-space out ka na naman!" Ada teased.
"Ano nga yun ulit?" I asked.
"Sabi ko, dito na ulit titira ang mag-ina ni Mayor," she replied.
Nearing nine years since Owen left, everything about him faded from my memory. But a chance encounter made me question if the person before me was my long-lost friend.
"Oh, sorry," I apologized to someone I accidentally bumped into.
"It's okay," a baritone voice said.
Facing the man, I felt a sense of familiarity. Could he be Owen, the boy I admired? Despite thinking I'd forgotten everything about him, those brown eyes made me remember all of our memories together before.
