My father had stayed quiet the whole time my mother was telling him the story. The only thing he did was nod his head and make a noise like he was letting my mother know what she was saying and that he was listening to her.
I'm guessing during the story I must have looked uncomfortable or scared (something in those emotions); because I ended up in my father's lap. He had his left hand on my back rubbing it gently and his right hand on my head lightly scratching it. I felt and heard that rumble again. At first, I stopped it because I felt my father stop scratching my head. When he did I looked up at him. He looked down at me with a questionable and confused look. I thought about it for a while then nodded my head answering his unspoken question. He smiled back and continued to scratch my head. I didn't start that rumble again until I felt him tap my head with his finger. I looked up at him and he nodded at me as if he was telling me that I could continue it. So I nodded back and continued. I heard him chuckle and held me close to him hugging me gently.
"...that's everything that has happened since last night." My mother said finishing the story.
My father let out a sigh. "Well… that is a lot to take in…" He looked down at me and continued speaking, “…Your Mama is right. I would never think less of you just because you are a bit different now. You are still my little girl and I will always love you Elsie no matter what. I promise. You must remember that.”
I felt my eyes water up. I held him tight and said, “I love you too Papa.”
"There is still one thing we need to discuss with you though dear…" My mother said in a soft voice.
My father looked back at her with curious eyes and asked, "Alright?"
My mother didn't answer back right away. It was like she was thinking of what she needed to discuss with my father.
She cleared her throat and said, "Well as you know Elsie is about to be let go for summer break after today…"
My father looked at her confused then looked at me with the same expression. I looked at him and slightly shrugged my shoulders, showing that I was just as confused as him and didn't know what my mother was going to talk about. He looked back up at my mother and simply nodded his head.
She smiled at him and softly chuckled as if knowing that we were both confused. "...I can tell both of you are confused so I'll just get to the point." She stayed quiet for a bit then said, "I was just wondering if you have any idea on how we are going to hide her ears. I don't think putting a hat on all day is going to help because I don’t think she won't be able to hear right and I really doubt that the school will let her have one because it is out of school uniform. Of course, if she wants to wear one that's up to her."
My father looked at her with a thinking face and said, "Oh ok I see now. That is a very good question that I honestly didn't even think about."
Still holding me in his arms, he furrowed his eyebrows upwards with his head slightly to the right side with his arms crossed his chest and made a “hmm…” type of noise, giving my mother a confused look.
My mother gave him a soft smile as she continued to say, "It's also not only just for today either."
My father and I both looked at my mother fast with the same confused look.
She laughed again then said, "What I mean is… it is for today but possibly the rest of her life. She can't just walk around with cat ears on her head without drawing some type of attention from everyone. Someone might say something and we could possibly lose her to someone like the government… they might want to do things to her so they could try and understand why she looks like this. Then what they might do if they learn about her powers.”
