Prologue:
MacIntyre Lorvil

I picked up a newspaper from one of the vendors in the city as I stood on the sidewalk awaiting my carriage.

There has been news of an uprising of upirs in the city and nearby ranches in the paper, I didn't believe it one bit.

"What a joke.." I mumbled to myself and tossed the paper aside.

I had been staying in the city for work purposes but I would go home as often as I could. Soon enough my carriage had arrived and I was on my way back home to my wife, Astoria.

My gut filled with excitement to see Astoria, yet the dark thought of upirs lingered on my mind. The scenery was breathtaking from the city to the ranch all the greenery, the animals and large lakes about.

Looking out the window was always my favourite part about traveling back and forth between the city and the ranch, the tranquility of the trip had always managed to put my heart at ease.

Hearing the screeching sound of the carriage coming to a stop. I hopped out of the carriage and headed straight towards the front door.

I entered the house and there she stood in the kitchen. Her gorgeous brunette locks resting at her shoulders. I cleared my throat in an attempt to catch her attention. She turned around, a grin spreading widely on her face as she runs into my arms.

"Beloved! You're back!" She exclaimed. I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight as I inhale her scent. As soon as she hugged me lavender filled up my nostrils and then I knew, that she had been gathering her favourite flowers.

"I thought that I might surprise you with a visit." I said chuckling as I followed her into the kitchen. "Oh my, well I should start getting supper ready!" She begins moving around the kitchen frantically.

She bends down to search the cupboard and I place my hand over the table top. As she gets up she hits her hand into my head without noticing and continues whip up a meal. After a few seconds she looks at me with a smile.

Heavens, I love her smile. I love the way her lips curve and they way she shows off her pearly white teeth.

"Where are my manners? Let me fix you a pot of coffee first. You must be exhausted from the your trip."

AS I TOOK A SEAT IN THE DINNING ROOM I took notice of the lavender flowers in a vase in the center of the table and a book resting beside it. I assumed that it must have been Astoria's as I know she loves to read.

I picked up the book and turned to the cover. "The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz" I opened the book to the first page and began reading as I sipped the coffee Astoria had prepared for me.

Astoria walked into the dinning room holding plates and cutlery on top "Oh, I see you've found my book." She smiled again as she began setting up the table.

I returned the smile and placed the book down on the table as I got up to help her set up the table. "Indeed, have you completed the book, dear?"

"Yes I have, I often read it whenever I thought of you." She placed a plate at the head of the table and the seat beside it.

She looked up at me almost hesitant as her lips parted and her eyes slowly looked up staring back into mine.

"Dear... have you heard about the rumors circling the uprising of upirs in the ranches?"

I looked up and my gaze softened at her as I slowly placed my hand over hers. "No need to worry about that my love, those are simply rumors." I slowly caressed her hand, attempting to calm her nerves.
