After Jack and Baide leave, Lasair's voice resonates in my head.
"We must go to the Empyrean. It seems we aren't the only ones who chose the same rider. We will be back soon."
"Okay."
They both leave, and I'm left to wander around.
My eyes skim around, inspecting each dragon and their rider, until my eyes land on a massive, and I mean massive, black dragon. The one who chose Violet.
I walk over. Surely she made it if he his here.
I stop in my tracks. Dain is super close to Violet. And I mean really close. She looks sort of... uncomfortable?
I know that Violet has had a small thing for Dain for years, but right now, when I thought she would enjoy him finally paying attention to her, she looks like she would rather be anywhere else.
And when he kisses her, I almost throw up in my mouth.
"Jealous?" Liam's voice says from beside me.
"Hell no. I've hated him since forever. I'm just watching how uncomfortable she looks."
"I'm watching Riorson. He looks like he's about to march back over there and kiss her himself," Liam smirks, still watching them.
"Why do you care?" I ask randomly.
He laughs. "Because it's funny to watch Xaden get jealou-"
I cut him off. "Not about that. About me. I distinctly remember you hating me a few months ago."
"You are not your father. I've realised that. And after I found out by Riorson what you had been helping Violet do, which was smartass I must say, I got it into my head that you aren't that bad."
"It was Violet's idea. I was just there as a lookout because I couldn't sleep. But I guess after that I kind of signed myself up."
"I've been thinking. Would you be able to come... to a rebel meeting? It doesn't have to be often; they are held once a week. I just think that you have a few skills that would be useful to the rest of them," Liam whispers, facing me. He looms above me, like everybody else, but his presence feels more like a shadow than Xaden's signet.
"I'll be there," I reply. My heart sort of flutters at how close he is. His eyes search my face.
We leave Xaden, Violet and Dain to sort out their shit.
After spending two months in the crowded barracks, having my own room is like a dream. I am never taking privacy for granted again.
The first morning after Threshing, I spot a rebellion marked girl walking out of Liam's room. A feeling bubbles in my chest that I don't like. I try to shove it down as I walk to breakfast with an oddly silent Arkea.
What were they doing in that room? Is it what I think?
Arkea breaks off from me without a word. Okay then, but I don't know what I've done.
I spot Rhiannon, Violet, and Ridoc walking a bit in front of me, so I hurry to join them.
"Good morning ladies," Ridoc says as he slings an arm around all of us, that's how big his arms are. "Or should I say, riders?"
"I like the sound of riders," Rhiannon replies, shooting a smile in his direction.
"It's definitely better than dead," Violet snorts. "Where's your relic?" She asks Ridoc.
