...
The past two weeks had been eventful to say the least.
The big black gelding that Kodi was breaking in, who she'd recently named sniper, had just flicked a switch since the fire, simply becoming 'dangerous', his eyes would roll and he'd just try to attack, which was what finalised Kodi's decision to turn him out onto a neighbouring property so he could just reset and have a break. She didn't want to rush him.
Colten's younger sister Tessa had came to live with them for a while, also staying in one of the dongas, and Kodi was more than grateful for the younger girl, mainly so she didn't end up having to be the only girl on the property, considering the fact her parents had just got back two days prior from the big smoke.
...
"You all packed?" Kodi asked as she watched Colten's 14 year old sister walk into her room in the main house, where she was packing her bag up.
The big ariat bag was filled with Hitchley and harrow jeans, Cinch jeans, T-shirts, work shirts, belts, tank tops and everything else she'd need for the big weekend at Deni Ute muster, which she'd been waiting for the past year for.
"Yup, I've just chucked everything in Your ute" She replied with a nod and a smile.
They decided to make a 'convoy' outta it, which was as followed. Matthew and Colten were taking the lead with Matthew and his girlfriend Jess in Matthew's Hilux, Colten's was running behind him with Tyler in his old Hilux, Kodi was behind them with Tessa in her Modified 75 series, Klay was behind Kodi with his trusty dual cab 79 series with his girlfriend Ally whilst Gunna third wheeled in the back seat. It was all planned.
It was a bit over an 8 hour drive, but the teens decided they'd smash it all out on the Thursday so they'd be there for both the Friday and Saturday, which the whole crew of Young adults and the two teenagers were exited for.
There was a point where Tessa and Tyler were going to stay behind, but considering the fact that Tylers best mate, who's little sister who was Tessa's best friend, was going to be their with their family, they had made the arrangement that whilst they were in the ute paddock the kids would be staying with their friends in the 'family' area.
...
The next morning was a 4am start for the crew of 6, the other three of were going to be joining on in Broken hill when the convoy went through.
Kodi chucked her Akubra in the hat holder in her ute, her Circle L placed on her head to finish her outfit that consisted of a pair of Hitchley and harrow jeans, her boots and a old Cinch T-shirt. The akubra however was coming out at night because she refused to get food dye and Beer thrown on her good hat, that just didn't sit right with her, she also had an abundance of caps in her bag so she felt set.
"Ready to hit the road?" She said over the UHF that crackled to life, all three of the utes on the same channel. It wasn't hard to tell where they were going with the swags thrown in the back with their bags.
"Yeah we're ready" Colten said, bringing his utes engine to life. For this section of the drive, Kodi was picking up the rear, being a bit slower of a driver so she didn't wanna hold the other two up. Like hey, she had Tessa to look after here.
"Radio check" Matthew said through the UHF, which then got a chorus of 'radio check' through straight after it.
"Let's rock and roll" Colten said, easing the ute into 1st as they headed up the drive, headlights on in the pitch black darkness.
...
The steady drive was filled with chatter in all the cabs, Kodi and Tessa getting into a vert intense conversation about how bitchy all the girls were in town. She loved the kid, and honestly considered the 14 year old one of her friends, which to others sounded weird but she was like her little sister, just like Tyler was practically Colten's non biological brother. After a stop in Broken hill to get breakfast/lunch and to pick up the final ute in the convoy, they were back on the road, arriving at the Deniliquin ute muster grounds at a bit after 2pm.
"Where we going?" Kodi asked phone on speaker mode, being a bit behind the others cause she dropped Tessa off in town instead of dropping her off at the gates.
"We've got a space in row H, I'll come up to the gate and jump in with ya" Colten said, having been the one who answered Matthew's phone.
"Righto, I'll cya then" She said, hanging up as she got through the gates, Colten jumping in the ute as he told her where to go and what row.
"I'm impressed" She said with a grin as she jumped outta the ute, stretching her legs from the long drive as she looked around. She was parked between the two guys, having been told 'she needed to stay where they could see her 24/7', so they were in a bit of a circle, with their 'row' being Klay's ute, Matthew's ute, Kodi's ute and then Colten's ute. Being at the end of the row meant they had their own little area for themselves. They had their chairs set up in a circle, which Kodi quickly joined, putting hers inbetween Colten and Klay's girlfriend Ally as they all sat around the circle, Laughing and telling storys.
...
By the time the sun had sent, the girls had all headed off to the toilets, all three of them going together, knowing and also having been told 50 times by the guys that girls shouldn't walk around alone there, especially at night. Although the muster didn't start till the next day, everyone was already drinking like it was culture, which heck it kind was.
After dodging 10 disgustingly drunk guys who asked them to come back to their swags, they finally finished their business and headed back towards camp, all laughing about just whatever. Kodi's smile and laugh however faltered when she saw some chick at their camp, wearing Colten's hat might she add. 'Wear the hat, ride the cowboy.'
"Fuck me dead" She muttered under her breath, putting a fake and forced smile on her face as she walked over, sitting back down in her chair.
"Soph, This is Klay and Matthew's missus, and the baby of the crew Matthew's sister" Colten said to the girl, who said an overly chirpy 'hello' to the three.
Kodi knew why she was so hurt by Colten calling her the 'baby', she also knew why hurt she was when she saw the girl wearing Colten's hat, which he hadn't seemed to try get back from her yet.
She liked her brothers best friend.
She knew she had for a while, she had just been refusing to admit that it was true, which had now got her into the mess she called jealously, so instead of saying anything, she just grabbed a chair, sat down and practically drowned it, no one realising but Matthew, who knew damn well why her happy persona changed so mad in a point of a second.
She liked his best friend.
