Twenty years ago...
If there was one sure fact in life, it was that children were high-energy people. They could run a full marathon, play almost an entire afternoon, and still, just a glass of water or a small snack was enough to get them back into action. Jirou and Kaminari were no exception. They played almost every day and only a 5-minute break was enough for them to regain their energy. That was the advantage of being nine years old and having an almost intact innocence.
At that moment, they had both finished running in the park and needed a break after they felt their souls leave their bodies. They sat down on the grass to rest for a moment.
Kaminari opened his small backpack where he had his ball and grabbed his water bottle that was at the bottom of it, opening it easily and drinking it with his two small hands, avoiding spilling any drops on the grass.
"I see that you are tired." He said, looking at her and trying to talk to her friend.
"We ran about a hundred kilometers. Do you think I'm not?" Jirou replied.
If Kaminari had learned anything from being around Jirou, it was how sarcastic she could be. But he didn't mind, rather, it was funny to see her friend with that mood.
"Alright alright, calm down Jirou. Don't get angry." He handed her the bottle of water. "Do you want some?"
Kaminari had learned from his mother that he always had to share when the situation called for it. And seeing that Jirou hadn't exactly brought a drink, he had the intention to invite her some water.
"Alright." She spoke.
She grabbed the bottle and took a small sip. Kaminari looked happy knowing that he was helping her friend, while Jirou kept a serious look. However, she didn't deny that she was grateful to Kaminari for inviting her some water.
Their friendship was something unique. They had met by chance due to a hit she received from Kaminari's ball, and from that day on, they went four times a week to play in the park. At first, that boy seemed annoying and was sometimes bothered by how optimistic he could be at all times, to the point that she would hit him with her jacks when he exaggerated his behavior, with him responding that her attacks seemed like tickling.
However, his presence brought her some comfort. Furthermore, he was the only one who appreciated watching her small concerts when they went to her house. She wasn't yet an expert on the guitar, but Kaminari celebrated every time she played that instrument. She felt like someone really appreciated her talent, plus she felt comfortable finding a friend to hang out with. In fact, he was her first friend.
When she finished drinking water, she handed the bottle back to Kaminari, thanking him for inviting her. However, she still felt without energy. Something was missing to wake her up completely, and she just remembered something else she had brought.
From her pocket, Jirou had taken out a bar of chocolate that her father had given him. A bar of 12 small pieces of chocolate, with an exclusive almond flavor that the girl loved. She opened it carefully, and began to eat it slowly. With every bite of it, she felt life returning to her.
The boy noticed the candy that Jirou had in her hand and moved closer to her.
"What are you eating?" Kaminari asked.
"Food." She answered.
"Does it taste good?"
Jirou couldn't believe how he could ask things like that. However, she was no longer in the mood to be sarcastic.
"It's chocolate, so you can imagine what it tastes like."
For a moment, both kids were silent. While Jirou ate her chocolate quietly, Kaminari on his side wanted to try her friend's candy, which he thought that it was unique after seeing its packaging.
