coriolanus was only on stage with her to introduce himself and then the spotlight was back on her.
"good evening." she smiled, breaking out in a huge grin with everyone cheering. "thank you, thank you."
"well, the crowd certainly loves you already!" lucky flickerman exclaimed. "how does that make you feel?"
"it's great." she started. "no one's ever been that excited for me. not even in twelve. no one besides.." she signed. "well, my little sister."
"leaving your sister must've been a very tear-jerking moment. i know it was for everyone at home. want to tell us more about her?"
"her and i are really so different, but we're best friends. she sees me for me. when my mothers not around," she began, "i'm her only parent. she's the light of my life, i don't know how she'll continue without me." this had caused a slur of aws from the crowd.
"wow, so deep. any boys waiting on you at home?" he asked, earning a giggle from summer.
"no, mr. flickerman, no one at home."
"at home? are you alluding that maybe he's with you?" mr. flickerman liked the drama and clearly the audience did too.
"maybe, maybe not." she gave a small, flirty smile to coriolanus.
"what a tease! summer barlowe everyone!" lucky flickerman announced which followed with cheers from the audience.
summer had waved her goodbyes to the crowd and followed coriolanus off stage.
"how'd i do, mr. snow?" she asked.
coriolanus' face was red.
"summer, you were.. great." he moved closer to her, inches apart.
she cleared her throat, "dill couldn't get a word out without coughing."
he inched closer before seeing peacekeepers drawing in, "i'll see you soon, s."
coriolanus laid in bed that night, knowing soon enough he'd have to say goodbye to summer.
the day of the hunger games came and he sat across from summer.
"everyone's terrified," she said sadly. "it's not easy, saying goodbye,"
"summer, you made more money and have triple the gifts of anyone else in the games."
"triple..?"
"and i have one too" he slid a meal towards her. "you'll need the strength."
"i don't want to die corio, i'm not ready." she whispered, tears welling in her eyes.
he wiped the tears from her cheeks. "you're a fighter. i won't let you die."
"by tomorrow, you'll be done with me."
"i will be an absolute wreck tomorrow summer! i said you mattered to me because you do. as summer barlowe. as the actress not the tribute! as one of my closest friends! as my.." he had no idea what to say next. he wanted her, it was obvious. but he had walls, for a reason. these past few days, he'd gotten closer to her more than ever.
"i loved your interview. i loved hearing you talk about me like that. i want you to be thinking about me. it's stupid because i can't guarantee that you'll survive. but summer, you are the absolute best girl i've ever met. you're wonderful. i can't lose you, i refuse to. please, don't cry."
summer knew she couldn't top what he had said, but actions are bigger than words. summer cupped his cheek into his hand kissed him. the salty tears mixing with their kiss. he kissed her back, returning the intimacy.
"i feel so alone here corio."
"you're not. my eyes will not leave you. we're in this, together."
"thank you."
there wasn't much he could do for her in this moment, but he remembered his mother's compact with the rat poison. he reached into his pocket and handed it to her.
"i can't take this.."
"please, it's like a promise. give it back to me when you come out of this alive. there's something there for you, to help in the games."
"you and that kiss will be all i'm going to think about."
"it won't be our last kiss."
he pulled her in, kissing her even more passionately than before. this time, everyone's eyes were on them, but it didn't cross their minds.
"that won't be the last one either." summer said, smiling at him.
"summer barlowe, you are going to be the death of me."
