reaper had now appeared at the far end of the arena, which had caused summer to go back into hiding. reaper didn't follow, but did take the remainder of her supplies with him. once summer had left, lysistra realized it was her time to go, turning on her heel and giving coriolanus a sad smile before leaving.
"well, there goes ill dill," lucky flickerman began. "our most popular tribute is still trucking through, miss summer barlowe!"
most popular was great, anywhere but in the arena summer realized.  in the arena, that only created a target on her back. however, this also meant that she was getting many donations which kept her alive in times of hiding. losing jessup as an ally and protector crushed her though, the thought of him being with her throughout it all had been comforting for her, and now he was gone. coriolanus had promised her that he'd always be with her, even if it meant the other tribute from her district wasn't. was she holding onto his compact now? thinking of him being with her? by her side? most likely, she'd been thinking of ways to stay alive. it still didn't hurt coriolanus to hope.

lamina had been killed by coral, tanner and mizzen. in a turn of events, coral then killed tanner.
while having a conversation with dr. gaul, noticed the snakes.
"where are you taking the snakes?" coriolanus asked.
"just to another lab," one of the workers responded.
coriolanus thought awhile on this. he realized with the end of the games approaching, they may use this as a tactic to quicken the end. what he then couldn't stop thinking about was summers body covered in snakes, head to toe.  he pulled out the handkerchief he uses to wipe off her tears and when nobody was looking, slipped it into the cage of snakes. suddenly, he was washed over in panic realizing just what he'd done. if anybody saw, both of their families would be killed. anything for summer.
he made his way to the plinth apartment, figuring he'd go to see sejanus.
"coriolanus?" he entered, surprised to see him. "why are you here?"
"oh, i just figured i'd pay you a visit."
"as much as i love that you're here, it usually comes with a price... what do you need?" he'd asked in response.
"i did something. something that might come back to bite me later." coriolanus sighed, looking nervous.
"so you're here because you think i'm an expert at breaking rules?"
"well when you say it like that.."
"what did you do exactly?" sejanus asked.
"i can't say much, but it was only for summer. i just want her to be okay, and this may ruin my life."
"you must really care about her.. listen, it'll be worth it in the end when she wins and you can be with her. assuming you guys are.. together."
while coriolanus wanted to confirm this, he hadn't actually known what they were. summer only kissed him.. well twice, and although it was everything to him, he hadn't known how she viewed the kiss. maybe this was all her plan. make coriolanus fall for her so she has automatic protection in the games. this didn't sound right, but coriolanus had been on edge since what he'd done.
"we aren't. we're just mentor and tribute. if she wins, i win." coriolanus lied.
"then, it'll all be worth it when she wins." coriolanus nodded in response, half lying to sejanus. while they had been mentor and tribute, there was something more coriolanus wasn't telling him.
the next day, coriolanus was back at the academy, watching the tributes.
"oh, and down goes wovey!" lucky flickerman exclaimed.
an off-colored liquid flowing from her mouth as she hit the ground, coriolanus wondered if this had been summer.
summer didn't mean to kill her, but she'd seen a water in the tunnels and put the rat poison in it without giving it a second thought. coriolanus wished he could talk to summer.
i miss you summer, i hope you're okay, he thought.
