the following morning, coriolanus ran to the zoo to check on summer. she was nervous, but ok. that's all he needed.
"summer.." he whispered, causing her to turn towards him and try to approach him.
"corio!" she exclaimed, despite her dry, scratchy throat.
"i'm so sorry for all of this, summer."
"it's not your fault."
"maybe i should quit." he responded.
"no. i cannot do this without you." she said. other tributes turned towards them. her feels her obvious to anyone besides him.
without thinking, he tried to touch her face, only to be to far away.
"once you're in the games, i can send you as much food as i want but you need to get people to send you money."
"so put on a show." she responded, understanding him.
"i'm sure you will."
"times up!" a peacekeeper yelled.
"i better go, i'll see you soon s."
"thank you corio. for the crackers."
despite feeling useless, he just said, "it's nothing."
"it may be nothing to you but it means the world to me. to have someone care if i live or die.. even if they don't know me."
"your life matters."
"thank you, i'm glad someone cares." she laughed, sarcastically.
"summer.. you matter to me." he repeated, being more sentimental this time.
"time to go, mr. snow!" the peacekeeper shouted, ushering him out.
"i'm so sorry, i'll be back as soon as possible." summer watched him leave, tears in his eyes. she knew he was working his hardest to make sure she had the best possibility of surviving. she was so grateful for him. the peacekeepers had forced everyone to stand, as they were dragged away. the first thing she saw was brandys body being strung up onto the crane. why should the girl that brandy killed get a funeral? she deserved what came to her. they had been brought to the arena shortly after.
the arena was dark but coriolanus could still see the tributes. he had gotten close enough to summer without them noticing. when summer saw him, she grabbed his hand, holding it. coriolanus' heart skipped a beat. he gave her a small smile and pulled away, knowing that if he let this happen, she'd see something in him that she wished she didn't.
"it was so hard seeing you like that this morning." he whispered.
"they fed us, corio."
"really?" he asked.
"we got dinner and breakfast, i know you slipped some food in my pocket too." she smiled, looking up at him.
he could see her piercing blue eyes even in the dark. "you're feeling better?" he asked.
"i was excited to see you again." she responded.
coriolanus smiled at her. he was glad that summer enjoyed his company just as much as he enjoyed hers. their smiles faded quickly as the arena around them began to explode.
