Centuries ago, long before the current rulers of the five kingdoms had reign over the lands, before the celestials were cast out, and before the supernatural were exiled and forced into hiding; there was peace. Mortal and supernatural beings alike walked the streets freely, going about their daily lives without even a thought of something terrible happening. The mighty celestials kept order while dwelling up in the heavens, making sure all people were safe.
At the time, the world was in perfect balance. A good balance. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. Maybe a new discovery here, a crime there, but nothing that would alter the course of life for years and years to come. But.
Nothing ever stays perfect. Things don't stay balanced for long. Eventually, the winds blow, knocking everything away, scattering debris everywhere.
War.
The supernatural beings from every kingdom, along with a few mortals, united and fought. Meanwhile, celestial beings were seen falling from the heavens themselves, cast out, never to return.
There are many stories of how this war began. Some say a celestial being - or a small group of them - rebelled against the rules and order of their duties, causing havoc in the heavens, and eventually in the mortal world. Others say, that a group of mortals were tired of being inferior to the supernatural, wanting to be as powerful as them, they began to fight. Even more say one of the rulers were unhappy with the other kingdoms, craving power and control over all. That is one of the more popular stories, along with the one if supernaturals starting a revolution in one kingdom, causing a butterfly effect. Of course, these are all just stories different people have passed down through generations. There are documents on the war, written by different beings from different kingdoms. It was said to have lasted years, decades almost. Thousands injured, and even more dead. The land in which the people fought stained red, a putrid smell of iron catching the noses of anyone within a mile radius. There is a new balance now. An unfair, unkind balance. One that leaves children orphaned, and wives widowed. One that leaves even the strongest of men weeping on their knees. The King of the Core Empire, along with his wife, originally came up with the idea of this system once the war came to a hiatus.
The King gathered all the rulers from the other four kingdoms, whether in good terms or not, and they discussed this plan in a meeting that servants of that day documented to take exactly 24 days. On the 25th day, the rulers returned to their kingdoms and the way continued no more than five days later. The most popular document was from a cup bearer who was very hard of hearing, and served the rulers during the long meeting. It is said that they all agreed on one thing; the number of mortals in their kingdoms were steadily decreasing, and the supernatural only grew in numbers, developing much stronger abilities in the process. At this time, all rulers were mortal, so this was not good for them. Civilians being more powerful than the ruler themselves? Absurd. Something had to be done. The cup bearer states that this was the only thing the rulers could agree on at this time. The plan was set in stone, the puzzle was nearly complete. All that was left, was for the war to end, so that a new balance could be formed. A cruel balance. One that would alter the course of lives for generations to come.
There are many documents from the survivors of the war. There are so many, that libraries have an entire section for them. The documents are from the start to the end, written by soldiers, servants, nurses, children, supernaturals, mortals, and so on. Though, these libraries are very rare. Not many even know they exist. The system in which has been created is cruel indeed. The number of mortals has greatly increased, and supernaturals are just barely within 10% of the population of all beings who dwell in one of the five kingdoms. The celestials that were cats out of the heavens are said to live amongst the common folk, or secluding themselves in the woods away from civilization. The supernaturals however, do not dare come out the their hiding, least they face execution or torture till death. This system has not ended, and with this awful order, come equally awful rulers. Mostly.
The tyrant ruler of the Core Empire, whose name was never revealed, the sadistic Queen Maria of Levelle, the blood hungry King Alastor of Atarah, the deadly silent King Oliver of Ellevan, and the kind hearted King Rajan and Queen Erica if Virian. They all hold some sort of secret. Whether that be a secret kept for the well-being of their kingdom, or for themselves. Actions have consequences, these are the consequences of the ancestors. The ones who fought, only to be killed in a seemingly meaningless battle.
There have been revolutions, but they never end well. All have ended in mass amounts of bloodshed, broken weapons, and loud cries. This story is not the same, or so I'm told.
