Chapter One
“Merida DunBroch.”
The words froze in the silence, no one dared to yell in my defense or cry out with sorrow. Was it because of the risk, or because no one was surprised. Everyone I knew had been mentally preparing themselves for this moment, they knew it was going to be me, and so did I.
Last year there was debate over whether or not the reaping was rigged, because every year it was always the less wealthy children picked from the bowl of names. They were well aware that the less fortunate had their names in a lot more than the wealthy, but a rich child had never been chosen, so the parents of the less fortunate grew suspicious. So after a small argument President Black agreed to make the wealthier families have their names in a few more times, still not even half the amount of times the less wealthy children had their names in, but my family and I weren’t stupid. We knew President Black would rig the reaping so a wealthy child would be chosen.
Me being the mayor’s only child old enough to enter the hunger games pretty much meant that the odds were not in my favor.
With the help of the Peace Keepers, I slowly make my way up onto the stage, all eyes are on me. I see the faces of everyone I have ever loved, hated, and known. I stand in the cold silence and wait for my opponents name to be called.
The same woman who called my name walks ever so slowly over to the other bowl. The bowl filled with boys names. I wonder who it could be. There were no wealthy boys besides her three brothers, and they were too young to compete. Perhaps the president hadn’t rigged the boys. Well there was only one way to find out, waiting. I hate waiting, cant we just get this over and done with? Maybe I can block out the cry of the chosen boys friends and family. That was the worst part, the look of shock on the faces of people I don’t know, and all I know about them is that they just lost someone they love.
I cringe as the woman holds up a small piece of paper she has picked from the bowl.
“Jack Frost” she said with a sweet tone. My face is all scrunched up now as I wait for the cries of his loved ones, but they never come. I open my eyes in disbelief. When I saw the boy carelessly walk towards the stage it all makes sense. No oned cried for him, because no one cared for him.
I personally don’t have anything against him, but it seems the rest of our district does. He was always causing trouble with pranks and thievery so none of the adults and barley any of the children liked him.
When he reached the stage and climbed the small steps we were required to shake hands. As we both reached out and shook hands I flinched when I felt his skin; it was cold as ice, maybe even colder. As we stood there, face to face, I noticed he wasn’t looking me in the eyes, but examining my hair.
By now I should be used to it but it still feels weird, whenever I meet new people they stare at my hair like its some big deal. I’ll admit it’s a little different; huge, bright red, and all over the place, but still, I find it very rude.
Jack didn’t seem too much of a challenge; if it came down to it I could probably beat him, if I had a bow.
I can’t help but think of the other children over the districts chosen to battle me. I wonder if they’ll be upper class like me, or poor outcasts like Jack. I can’t really see an upside to either of them, I don’t really want to be violently murdered by some rich, healthy, brute but then again I don’t want to kill a scrawny little misfit with no chance of survival. I guess the only solution is to let them all kill each other, I can’t imagine killing Jack, but if it came down to him and I, I would not hesitate to kill.
Okay so I’m not worry about Jack, its just the other kids, I cant imagine battling an older version of one of my brothers, just the thought of it makes me feel sick.
I have been prepared for this, training with my bow, but not everyone was as smart as I, they probably didn’t see this coming, I cant help but imagine what its like for them.
