Devon held her in his hand, pulled her closer until he felt there was no space between them. But he could see her pain even in her sleep. She tried to act strong but he knew, the evil thing had come to separate them and there was nothing he could do. The evil thing was eating her up and he could do nothing to stop it. Sometimes he sits and thinks, wishing that maybe if he hadn't met her ...'no!' he would scream in his head. There's no other he would love more than he loved her. So,no, he didn't have any regrets of always being there for her at her last moment.

To think in the morning they had been the happiest. Strolling in the Sandy shores of ocean Silver and eating in the best food restaurant in the small island going by the name Didac. She had begged him for days after she had seen the advertisement about the small island, saying she wanted to go. She wanted to end her days happy and not in a damn hospital bed in a cold room with scary machines that reminded her everytime of her quandary.  She had accepted her fate and she wanted to die free and closer to him than ever. So he had to agree, and there they were. In that little island having the time of their lives.

He remembered when he met Reina for the first time in May bay in the middle of July. She was all wrapped up in clothes to keep out the cold.  She was was throwing rocks into the water angrily. He had gone out there for a sail but when he saw her, he couldn't help but draw nearer. She had barked at him to stay away. Even with that storm in her eyes, she reminded him of a bright summer day. From that moment, even he couldn't explain how they'd gotten closer.

They had been worlds apart. He was a rich kid waiting for his father's inheritance but also working to make it bigger. She was a simple girl who lived living life without a care no matter the struggles. She lived with her mother who had later died due to cancer. He had been there for her and had held her up in that hard time in her life. She made him happy.

They got married young too. He was twenty when he proposed and she was eighteen when she said yes. Now she was twenty three and the cursed disease that took her mother was threatening to take all his happiness away from him.

Now the bed was warm but it had never been colder than it was today. Storm clouds could be seen from a far. Realization struck him hard;the sea gods had come to take their beautiful mermaid away from him forever. She had collapsed as they walked back home that very afternoon. The doctor said that Reina wouldn't make the night if they didn't get her back on the machines. But she...she held his hand strongly with a grip of steel as though she weren't as weak as she looked now.

He looked into her bright brown eyes, glassy and moistened with beads of tears. But the look in her eyes was resolute, never without a doubt. He stroked her cheek, her long marvelous long blonde hair was gone. "I want to stay..." Reina's faint voice echoed severally in his ears." No Reina....you can't..." Devion said his voice breaking before he could finish.

He had never cried again after the last time she walked down the isle to be united with him. She held up her shaking hand to hold his cheek gently. "I'm....tired Devion, it's time to let me go...please..." There were those tears in her eyes again. But no regrets, just the storm she had seen in her the moment they had first met.

The pleading look in her eyes, the pain she tried to hide, that sweet smile on this angel's face meant to comfort him. Yet he had no power to save her, money he has but money couldn't save her. Instead he lay next to her after ordering a very flustered doctor away. He wasn't ready to let go yet,but he honoured Reina's wish; the only thing he could give her now.

Her eyes flattered open before the morning sun began to rise. Devion was happy, confused and everything in between. The doctor had said that she wouldn't make past the night. He was almost rejoicing when he saw her smile. "Devion, can you open the curtains? I want to see the sunrise." She sounded healthy, her body looked stronger but her skin was still pale. Could it have been a miracle! A second chance with her? He quickly got up and drew up the curtains to reveal sealing to floor windows, with a breath taking view of the rocky shores. In front of them, a blue ocean. The sun slowly began to show it's little rays that blossomed into larger ones every passing minute. The storm clouds seemed to have disappeared.

Devion helped her to sitting position and then sat next to her, holding her even closer than before. If this was a sign of a second chance,he wasn't going to waste it. They talked of their beautiful love, sang one song they both loved; the song they danced to on their wedding day. They recalled the funniest moments they'd experienced with each other. She laughed with a vibrance he hadn't seen in a very long time. Her eyes settled on the sunrise and the multicolours it caused on the ocean surface. "I love you Devion,so much. But when  I am not here anymore, I want you to....be happy....okay..." Tears breamed and streamed down her face as she smiled. No! No! No! She was okay, why was she speaking like this!

He was lost again...too much to know what to say anymore. What of his second chance?

"It breaks my heart to leave you. But always know that I'll always be here even when you think I'm completely gone" She raised herself a bit higher and planted a kiss on the man she never thought she'd come to love so much. His blue eyes looked at her, hurt and confused. They asked only one question. "Where are you going without me,what I'm I to do without you?" He didn't have to ask aloud. She knew. She found herself laughing and held him again for the last time, hugging him tight and listening to the sound of his heartbeat. She would miss this, she would miss him. "Don't you dare follow me Devion. I want you to stay here and figure it out. Be happy, I am...." It became a bit hard to breathe. As she felt the life in her slipping away, she pushed out. "Happy."
She smiled, one last breath. And she was gone.
Devion didn't let go,he held her closer. He smiled kissed her head, but the tears that followed after was only the little part of the ripping out of his heart. He couldn't believe she was gone, but he was at peace. She had had her happy end.
