Piper's POV:
I hadn't seen much of him over the years, but I recognized Apollo as soon as I saw him. His blond hair fell in perfect waves and his tan skin seemed to glow. He leaned against the wall, casual as could be, a self-assured smirk on his admittedly gorgeous face.
He was insufferable.
"I'm just here on a little trip to help you demigods out." I began to ask him what he was talking about, but he cut me off. "You can thank me later. Look, I know it seems pretty bad out there–fissure, green light and all–but it's about to get a whole lot worse."
"It always is," Percy muttered under his breath.
Apollo absentmindedly ran his hands along his biceps as if trying to subtly show off as he continued. "Oh, complain all you want, Son of Poseidon. Doesn't change the fact that you've got a pissed-off goddess on your hands." He paused, like he wanted us to beg for the information.
Annabeth took a deep breath before saying in a measured voice, "If you want to tell us something, Apollo, just tell us."
"Well, if you insist," said Apollo. "You might know that I'm good buddies with Hecate. We go way back. Half-siblings and all. We knew each other when we were in diapers. Well, it seems like she's pretty upset. Thinks she deserves to be a major god and all that, which is nothing new. She's been complaining about it for centuries. Well, a couple weeks ago she stopped talking to me. Me! One of her closest friends! That's when I knew something was up. Now I'm getting word from some of my centaur friends that she's trying to do something big. I don't know how exactly, but rumor has it that she's trying to gain some more power for herself. So if you're worried about this fissure business, it's just the beginning."
There was a moment of silence, and then Hermione, who seemed to have been in a state of shock since Apollo had arrived, snapped out of it. "So you're telling me that you're Apollo. The god of the sun, healing, archery, music, and prophecy." Apollo nodded, seeming a bit pleased. "And you know that Hecate, the goddess of magic, is about to try to take over." Apollo nodded once more. Hermione looked indignant. "And you aren't going to do anything about it?"
I shot a worried look at Percy and Annabeth. Clearly Hermione didn't know that messing with a god was risky business. But to my surprise, Apollo only laughed.
"Aren't you bold?" he cackled. Instead of looking relieved, Hermione stood up straighter, only seeming more annoyed. Apollo went on. "Mortal girl I've never even met asking me why I'm not doing anything about it. What do you think I'm here for? Why do you think I told you all this?"
"Giving us a bit of information hardly seems like helping," said Hermione.
Apollo raised his eyebrows. "Really. Look, if I didn't want to drag myself into this mess I easily could've. But I did. I've put myself in a vulnerable position here. If Hecate gets word of this, do you really think she'll consider me a neutral figure?" He paused, letting the answer sink in. "So don't tell me I'm not doing anything."
Chiron stepped toward Apollo. His height was so imposing that if Apollo hadn't been a god, I wouldn't have been surprised if he had cowered. Instead, Apollo only blinked up at the centaur, having settled back into his self-assured slouch. "Apollo," Chiron said, "what do you recommend we do?"
"Figure out what Hecate's up to. Stop her." Apollo spoke as if it were the simplest thing in the world. "I gotta go. Nymphs to attend to." And with that, he vanished into thin air.
