I was at school waiting for my friends. I had Aidan and Ryan in front of me.
—Well, shall we have breakfast? We can get something in the lunchroom.
Ryan was typing rapidly on his cell phone screen, distracted. Aidan listened with wide eyes.
—Do they sell things without meat? A salad sounds good.
—What kind of salad?
At that point I shot Ryan a frustrated look, because he wasn't paying attention to me.
—Earth calling ___ —Aidan snapped his fingers in front of my face, which brought me back to reality—. What do you mean, what kind of salads?
—They sell two: vegetable and fruit.
Ryan turned off his cell phone (finally) and turned his attention to us. I looked at him a little seriously and he smiled at me.
—I want one too, Aidan.
—Well, but where's the dining room?
—I wouldn't know how to explain it to you, Aidan. I'll walk with you.
We walked in silence until I said something half-heartedly:
—The silly of your brother wasn't even listening to us because he was chatting.
—Oh yeah, I guess it was Hannah.
Hannah? For God's sake, Aidan, if you're going to tell gossip, tell it right.
—And who is she?
—She's my best friend and she's like Ryan's girlfriend or something —she pushed her hair to the side and looked at me—. Why?
—It's nothing, I was just looking at him so distracted and engrossed in his cell phone that I thought it was weird.
—Ah, you were looking at Ryan? —he asked, sarcastically.
—It was just for a moment —I sighed. Then we bought the two fruit salads and a soda for me—. But how come they're half a thing?
—Because I've seen them kissing, flirting and even writing romantic things to each other, but when people ask them they deny it.
—It could be an open relationship.
—And does that suit you, ___?
—I know where you're going with this, Gallagher. But I don't like your brother, I'm just kind of curious.
—I don't think he likes you anyway.
I made an offended face and he laughed.
—I'm not even that ugly.
—I don't deny that you're pretty, but Ryan likes the transient, the one-night stand. He likes to be free. Pretty faces don't please him as much as a nice body.
—And how do you like them, Aidan? —I asked him as we were sitting next to Ryan.
—I don't have a particular type, but there are certain qualities I like —I encouraged him to talk while Ryan just listened—. I'd love her to be affectionate, but not cloying; to be sincere, but modest; to be playful, but respectful.
—A lot of "buts", brother.
—She doesn't necessarily have to meet all that, I just want a sincere relationship.
Suddenly, I saw my best friend coming towards us. I cursed; when she was a few meters away, where the guys had already noticed her, she opened her eyes wide.
She came closer to me and whispered in my ear:
—Who are they?
—My stepbrothers —I said loudly and she hit me softly—. My stepbrothers —I whispered back.
—Hi —she said nervously to Aidan —. I'm Astrid Hernandez, ___'s best friend.
—Well, hi, Astrid.
—The serious one is Ryan. These are my stepbrothers, the Gallaghers. Very cute, aren't they?
I loved teasing Astrid because she would turn as red as a tomato, due to her fair complexion.
—Yeah...
—Well, boys, we're off.
—Sis —said Ryan, funny—, we're going in the same room.
—So?
—So we're going with you.
I sighed. Astrid looked excited.
Anyway, me and Astrid were talking together, a little apart from them.
—They're gorgeous, but Aidan is the best. The other one is so arrogant and haughty that he didn't even dare to greet me, as if I were a freak.
—I can introduce you to Aidan.
—No, no. But you'd better tell me, are those Lauren's so-called unbearable sons?
—Yes, they are.
—Yes?! ___, if you dare not tell me something this big again, I'll kill you.
—This big? What do you mean?
—I'm a teenager, ___, and I need to know why, when and where you're with two guys with model faces —she guffawed like crazy—. I can't figure out how you didn't tell me.
—I only met them yesterday, Astrid. Besides, I don't deny that I was also surprised to see Aidan when I got home yesterday.
—No, no, I poked him in the eye first.
—Bullshit, I saw him first.
—But I said it first! —she shouted so loudly that the Gallaghers looked at us.
—Now, let's stop talking about those two.
We got to the classroom, where the teacher was already there.
