As the sun dipped low in the sky, casting a golden hue over Verilia, Chahrazad stepped out of the makeshift hospital, her breath catching at the sight before her. The village was a tapestry of vibrant flowers and cobblestone paths, the charming houses seeming to smile in the warm glow of the evening. Lush greenery surrounded the village, and from the distant royal palace, the echoes of celebration drifted like a sweet promise of peace.
"Look, Chahrazad! Isn't it beautiful?" her older sister Elara exclaimed; her eyes gleaming with excitement. She twirled in place, the hem of her ivory gown catching the light.
Chahrazad smiled softly, though the smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "Yes, we're finally home..." Her voice was a whisper, almost lost in the evening breeze.
Elara linked her arm through hers. "Come, we have so much to do! My wedding is just days away, and we must make every moment count."
Chahrazad nodded, but her heart still felt heavy. As they walked through Verilia, the scent of blooming jasmine and roses wafted through the air, and the sounds of children's laughter reached her ears. Everywhere she looked, there was joy—yet beneath the surface, shadows of her captivity still clung to her soul.
"You'll be magnificent, Elara," she said, trying to push away her lingering sadness. "You always are. The day will be perfect."
Elara laughed lightly, but a flicker of uncertainty crossed her face. "I hope so. But what if I trip while dancing? Or forget my vows in front of everyone?"
Chahrazad squeezed her sister's hand, her eyes softening. "Elara, you'll shine like the stars themselves. I'll be right there beside you. You've waited your whole life for this."
Elara bit her lip but smiled back. "And you, Chahrazad...you'll dance tonight too. You can't let the past steal your joy forever. Promise me you'll dance."
For a moment, Chahrazad hesitated, the weight of her sister's request settling on her heart. "I'll try, Elara. I'll try."
As the evening deepened, they arrived at the grand hall of Verilia's palace, a glittering jewel under the twilight sky. Inside, chandeliers hung like constellations, bathing the room in a soft golden light. The sweet melody of a piano filled the air, coaxing the first couples onto the dance floor.
"Look at you!" Elara exclaimed, beaming at her sister. "You're breathtaking, Chahrazad. I knew that gown would suit you."
Chahrazad, in a gown of shimmering green and gold, smiled bashfully. The dress hugged her form perfectly, the fabric catching the light and making her emerald eyes glow. But despite her beauty, the scars of the past weighed heavily on her.
"Thank you, Elara, but tonight is your night." Chahrazad's gaze wandered across the room, scanning the sea of faces, feeling out of place among the laughter and celebration.
"It's our night," Elara corrected, taking her sister's hand. "You need this too. We all do."
At that moment, Prince Alaric Cousin Elos, the nobleman who would soon be Elara's husband, entered the ballroom. He was every bit the perfect groom—tall, regal, and wearing a smile that could charm an entire kingdom. He swept toward Elara, taking her hands in his.
"My love, you look more beautiful than I could have ever imagined," he said, his voice smooth, his eyes locked on her.
Elara blushed deeply and giggled. "Shall we dance?"
"Always," Elos replied, pulling her into a graceful twirl as the music swelled around them. They moved together as if the world had fallen away, leaving only the two of them.
From the shadowed corners of the ballroom, the Raven King watched, his hood drawn low over his face. He was not here as the dark ruler the world feared but as the King's trusted advisor. Yet, he had not come for politics or the whispers of power. His gaze was fixed solely on Chahrazad. Every movement she made seemed to pull him closer, and every smile lit something inside him he hadn't felt in years—something he feared.
