~Chapter One~

Kayla looked at her vibrant red hair in the car’s review mirror. She liked the way it looked and she laughed, remembering back to the day that she first revealed it to her mother who burst into tears as a result. Her mother was very proper and traditional. She looked at the large Hampton style house that she would now call her home, and then all around herself. She was surrounded by green grass and billowing trees. She turned around to face the hill her family had just driven up and looked down at the sea that was at the end of the road. Kayla loved the sea, she always felt at peace and serene when she was at the coast.

“Kayla come take your bags inside,” her mother called. She sighed, at the thought of leaving the beautiful view of the sea, and took her luggage from the boot. Inside the house seemed even bigger, but even so it felt cosy. She walked upstairs and dropped her bags on her new bedroom floor. She could not believe that she was actually, finally, going to live in her favourite place in the world. She thought that it was time for some exploring.

After she told her mum she was going for a walk she skipped down the hill that led to her new home and turned left. She knew that there were a few shops down the road on the right and to be honest at the moment she would rather not be near civilization. She did however look forward to the great bush track that was about half a kilometre from her home. Good thing she was fit.

When Kayla arrived at the start of the track she took in a deep breath. Oh how she loved Byron Bay, everything was so close and she could always here the sea. Everywhere she went in Byron people were riding their beach cruisers or their long boards. There was always someone catching a wave at the beach and people were always friendly. She couldn’t wait to learn to surf. The only thing was that her parents were reluctant to pay for lessons. Oh well, she thought, for a couple of hours I am only going to think about my beautiful surroundings.

About an hour into her walk she heard someone huffing and felt someone’s presence.

“Hey!” A deep pubescent voice from behind her called. She stopped and turned around. In front of her was a beautiful work of the gods. He had tanned skin, sun bleached hair, a sharp nose and defined jaw and what looked like a six pack under his tight shirt. “My name is Luke” he smiled and stuck his hand out for her to shake.

“You know it is very impolite for a gentleman to shake a women’s hand” She jokingly chided him.

“Good thing I’m not a gentleman, huh?” he wiggled his eyebrows making her laugh. She shook his hand and continued walking. He followed her and walked in pace with her. But instead of facing forward he walked backwoods so he could look at her. They talked for an hour about their mutual love of literature, indie music and nature and their hate of judgmental people and negativity. Kayla felt that for the first time in her life she had met someone exactly like her. She couldn’t wait to learn more about him and develop a friendship with him.
