"Happy birthday, M."

"Ayie, salamat, James!"

Audio recording ended...

Alone. That's how she felt. Mariah felt alone without her friends and her family. She only had audio recordings and pictures.

Her legs were shaking in anticipation, she sat there in the great hall, a worn-out and tired expression on her face. She was relatively tall for the average woman, around 6'1, which was quite shocking considering her mother was 5'0; maybe her father was tall. Not that Mariah cared. She hated her father, even if she never knew him.

"Let the sorting ceremony begin." Minerva suddenly spoke, making Mariah jump in her seat from her voice. She slept out for so long she didn't even notice the new first years coming in. Her eyes scanned the little group of first years.

"Is Professor Addy okay?" One student in Hufflepuff House whispered to their friend.

"I don't know... I hope she is." The other whispered back, their expression was concerned, watching their astronomy professor fiddle with her fingers, looking tired and nervous.

Mariah wasn't looking too well. She didn't have a good night's sleep yesterday; she felt as if something or someone was watching her all night, but every time she looked out the window, there would be nothing, sometimes, she'd see a shadow or a small black cat, nothing more.
