Author's POV

Vaidehi Mahendra Pratap Suryavanshi walked into the room with menacingly calm steps as her morals trained her to follow the path of grace amidst every chaos of life. Her every stride was an announcement of an impending predicament that would leave behind trails of unending smoke. Unbothered by the closed-off stance of her offspring, cold glances thrown her way and eyes lowered with respect due to her arrival, she sat on the sofa, settling the drape of her saree over her shoulder. She had already planned her grandson's future with a woman of poise and Shivangi had to be eradicated from her path at the very instant to ensure the prosperity of her coveting intentions.

"This marriage will never happen," she repeated firmly to confirm her unwavering stance. Rudra gave her a bored look. The elder clan stood up from their seats and greeted her. Shivangi simply stood there, looking down at the floor. Rudra bent to her level and whispered in her ears, making his lips touch her earlobes, "Aap yun duniya ke saamne nazrein jhuka leti hai na toh hamara sar khud-b-khud jhuk jaata hai (When you lower your eyes in front of the world, our head bows down automatically)."

She looked at him while he gave her a morose smile. Overwhelmed by his words, she refused to answer him but looked straight at Vaidehi in the eye. If not for herself, she would always fight for his sake. She promised herself. She had to see herself the way he saw her. Flawless. Like she belonged nowhere else but with him. She would never let him down.

"What are you saying, Maa Sa?" Karam asked his mother, though he knew this was a futile attempt to change her mind. He wanted her to mend her ways before she destroyed her relationship with him and his family. She had always favored his elder brother, but when it came to his children, Karam wouldn't let them face the heat of her actions.

"How can you even think that we would wed off our Rudra to a girl who isn't even normal enough to talk with us?" she chided her son and before he could speak she continued, "Remember Avantika, In our family, we choose the bride who has religiously kept solah somvar ke vrat under our customary guidance in the same year as marriage. Unlike Mahira, who has observed each one of them as per our traditional rules, this woman won't even know who Pandit Mohan Das Tiwariji is. How are you even entertaining these talks?"

"Shravan Maas began on 4th July 2023 and so did the series of my fasting for the year. The first Monday, i.e. on 10th July 2023, was my first fast. Pandit Mohan Das Tiwariji, the official priest of the Suryavanshi family who is ancestrally related to Purohit Aditya Narayan Ji has been continuously conducting all rituals of the family for 65 years. He wasn't in town, so the holy offering was presented to the lord on my behalf by his Guru, Shri Narendra Das TiwariJi himself. The first customary Monday ritual under your family guidelines is lighting 100 Diyas around the premises of Shiv Mandir on the night of the Vrat. Rudra lit 50 of them while I illuminated the rest, as per his commands. The next Monday, we traveled to Omkareshwar and offered our prayers while concluding the fast, as Pandit Mohan Das TiwariJi himself performed the veneration for us in Madhya Pradesh. With the divine blessings of Narmada Mata, my fast was completed and so was Rudra's. While I can provide the account of all 16 Mondays, Rudra and I fasted alongside your doubts would be eliminated as you have a conversation with Purohit Shree Atul ji, Pandit Ji and his associates, Shree Vishnubhat ji and Shree Parag Deshmukh Ji to affirm the validity of my words. Khamma Ghani Dadi Sa, Aapke liye pani Laa du?" Shivangi's pre-programmed text-to-speech enabled tablet announced her words loud and clear to Vaidehi as she sat stunned in her seat. She thought of mocking Shivangi for being incapable of being the bride the bloodline demanded, but she stood out in her expectations. Even she herself had never met Shri Narendra das ji and here this girl had even performed a veneration with him. Shivangi had shut her up in the best way possible while Rudra smirked openly, enjoying the show. When his velvet killed, she slayed with a smile. He had already tangled her into his life so deeply that she had unknowingly fulfilled every duty of his betrothed while he had just ensured that the path of thorns was converted into roses for her. He won't let anyone mock her in any damn manner. Her response today was the base of his pride.
