A Whole New World
Dance the Night Away - TWICE
What if Kim Rok Soo would anonymously get all the office gossip but by accident. He would be able to do it, he is good at staying still and unnoticeable, (even if he is 6ft [he is 7-8 centimetres taller than the Korean average for men]) but he also has a knack for attracting trouble.
He also has a very iNtErEsTiNg mind.
---
'I want to eat something sweet.' Kim Rok Soo thought, in idle thought. Truthfully, he was slacking off on the hours he got paid to work in but that was only because he had already finished the documents that Kim Min Ah had given him. He's scamming his boss to pay him more for less work, but it's not like he wasn't doing it – or how his thought process went. He was just being really efficient. 'I want something sweet, but Kim Min Ah would probably kill me if I ate something like that in the office. I can almost hear her yelling about ants and insects. ' Kim Rok Soo reconsidered, sliding down to lie down in his own arms. He moved his head into his most comfortable position and closed his eyes in tranquillity. 'This is quite peacefu-'
"Hiya, Team Leader. I need- Where the heck is he?"
'There goes my peace. Mm, well maybe I could escape to the safety which is under my desk. I might be able to since my presence should be covered by these stacks of paperwork-'
"Oh, there you are! Are you slacking off again? There's a reason why Manager Ma hates you huh?" Kim Min Ah scolded, pushing away the stacks of paperwork that blocked her view of him.
'Damn it, Min Ha. Right in the middle of my slacking. And is she scolding me? When- oh why bother...'
"Min Ha, I've finished the work that I was told to do in less time than I was given. I would hardly call this slacking off. I'd call it, taking a much-needed break from all this hard work." Kim Rok Soo opened his eyes and seemed to look directly at Kim Min Ah. That was an accident, but Kim Rok Soo just worked with it.She was slightly intimidated as his ice-cold, stoic expression seemed to look straight through her even if he was in the more compromising position. 'Damn he's still as unapproachable as ever. You'd think after 2 years of being under his rule, he'd melt a little.' She thought, hypocrisy lining her words as she herself was known to be stoic at times. Yet she smiled back challengingly, pulling Kim Rok Soo up. "You can have a break, but you can't sleep. Come on, let's get some coffee and wake you up." She dragged him out the office door.
'Hey!- Oh whatever. She is stronger than me so there's no point in trying to fight it. ...she could've just brought me coffee instead of dragging me from my office, makes it easier for the employees, me, and herself. Probably easier for the coffee machine too.' Kim Rok Soo thought while Kim Min Ah pulled him, sighing internally.
"So, I don't know what type of coffee you like so I just made it in accordance with your looks and personality!" Kim Min Ah said, once she reached the kitchen. It was filled with the aroma of strong, roasted coffee. Homely for some but disgusting to others. Kim Rok Soo liked the smell, as long as it wasn't too strong.
Kim Min Ah poured the steaming coffee into a mug before giving it to Kim Rok Soo. Kim Rok Soo, foolishly, took a large gulp without looking. His eyes opened, his pupils shrunk slightly, and he swallowed slowly. He then realised what Min Ha had said.
Kim Rok Soo glanced at the coffee in his hands after that description and taste. '...This coffee is darker than my future and more bitter than my soul. '
Min Ah poured a cup for herself and mixed in 1 packet of sugar and a small bit of creamer. "I like it pretty dark, but I think that it needs to balance the flavours." She waved around the little stick which she used to stir the coffee before sucking on it.
Kim Rok Soo looked at the almost empty sugar packet enviously – wanting sugar in his own. But the sugar was behind Kim Min Ah, and he didn't want to make her uncomfortable by talking, but more importantly, he didn't want to make himself uncomfortable. Then he noticed Kim Min Ah was just staring at his cup of coffee, with the stick in hand. Kim Rok Soo felt awkward as her attention fixated on the coffee cup.
'Am I doing something wrong? Is there a certain way I'm meant to be holding the coffee cup? Am I drinking too much at a time? Too little? What is it? Damn it, I didn't know there was coffee drinking etiquette too... Someone more practised in the ways of society, tell me what I'm doing wrong!'
'Is he not going to have sugar with that? Or creamer? He's just drinking straight dark expresso? He's not even going to stir it to cool it down? Is Team Leader a masochist? Damn, it kind of fits - with the whole emo aesthetic he's going for and how he tackles Level 2 missions by himself. ...There's no way.' Min Ah eyed him up and down, in complete shock that he could just stomach the coffee without any additives. '...Am I the weak one?'
Meanwhile Kim Rok Soo was sweating bullets under the pressure of the unannounced test on how to drink coffee. So he was reasonably surprised when she tossed the stick in the trash to down the entire cup of coffee although he didn't show it on his face. She wiped off any coffee marks on her face with her sleeve, dramatically let out a steamy breath, and then put the coffee cup into the sink. Kim Rok Soo turned 90o degrees as she started to run past him.
"There's Bae Puh Rum - Team Leader, don't leave!" She turned towards him before turning back.
"Take your time." Kim Rok Soo replied as she rushed to tackle her husband.
'...Did I pass the test?' Kim Rok Soo thought as the door swung and closed itself. He stood there, completely still for a couple seconds before quickly heading towards the sugar and pouring in 3 full packets of sugar and a quarter pint of creamer. He stirred quickly, with a metal spoon, before taking a sip of his still-hot drink. 'Peace at last. And my coffee is finally edible, maybe I won't die from all this bitterness after all.'
He contentedly smiled by himself before wondering. 'Now do I take my chances and go back to my office or stay here? Min Ah did tell me to wait here, and do I want to go against her just to return to my office? Besides that corner is looking really comfortable. ...If I leave, she might see me or worse, people might try to talk to me. If I stay in this empty room, by myself, there's only a small chance. My office is pretty far now that I think about it and that corner is like 2 steps away. But the sunlight- Does my office smell like freshly brewed coffee? I don't think so. ' After he weighed out the pros and cons, he decided to just sit in the corner on the floor and wait for Min Ah to return.
The kitchen floor was made out of checkered tiles – grey, light purple, light blue, and white. In the corner Kim Rok Soo was sitting in, the tile he was sitting on was white. A bit hypocritical, Kim Rok Soo thought as he usually wears dark clothes to blend in and now, he's sitting in white – making himself stand out. He breathed in the coffee smell and just vibed with the room. He was finishing the coffee, leaving only the dregs. He was about to get up until he flinched at the sudden bangs of the door slamming – hitting the wall when it opened and closed. 'Crap, I should go-'
Two strangers came into the room, causing Kim Rok Soo to edge towards the door slowly. As he slowly made his way to the door, he started memorising their features involuntarily. There was a taller woman wearing what seemed to be 3mm-thick glasses. She was wearing a black shirt with a plaid jacket on top, and her hair was in a messy ponytail. She had ripped, dark blue jeans and keychain dangling out of her pocket. She had multiple hair-ties on her wrist and Kim Rok Soo could've sworn there was a small pencil in her hair.
On the complete opposite side of the spectrum, and the room, was a shorter, more colourful lady. Her hair was in a pixie cut but she had some rose-gold highlights which popped out. Kim Rok Soo could only describe her outfit as casual. She had bandages and band-aids scattered across her body which mainly resided on her face and her legs – under the fishnet stockings. If this office workplace was normal (and not very desperate), they would've at least got a telling-off, but the office needed people to keep this place afloat, and the locals safe.
It's not like Kim Rok Soo could judge, he had his own weird style. Turtlenecks and skintight pants, usually in darker colours. There were bandages attempting to cover the rest of visible areas - not including the face. He probably looked worse than they did. He saw all the weird looks, but it was the better option. He'd rather be labelled as the weird, cold, scary emo than have people surround him and let them get hurt.
"You- I- I LIKE YOU. R-ROMANTICALLY." Stranger 1# yelled at Stranger 2#, as a blushing mess. "I've liked you since that day when I tripped and dropped-, I-I was never into Ja Kyung, I was into you!"
Kim Rok Soo's eyes widened, his jaw dropped, and stayed completely still. 'WHAT?! What in the K-Drama is going on right now?! How do they not see me!? And isn't Ja Kyung the manager in the service department?! So these ladies are the new JUNIORS?!' Kim Rok Soo frantically searched through his records of the company and all the company data he memorised. 'I was right! So these must be Yong Mun-Hee and Eom Mi-Hi. I DIDN'T NEED TO KNOW THIS. Would I be able to escape? No, they're blocking the door.' Kim Rok Soo's temperature went up from the record, but he didn't notice.
"What? You like me, since when? I'm not even half as pretty as you are and Ja Kyung is so much more capable and-" Yong Mun-Hee said, confusion swirling around her face. "Wait, I thought you hated me?"
"Mun-Hee, I could never hate you. In fact, I love you." Eom Mi-Hi confessed, blushing harder, and wiping away the other's tears.
'Ugh, lovey-dovey relationships. That's so cringey. Do I hide and ignore them, or do I make myself known before they do anything gross?'
Yong Mun-Hee clasped her hands before letting go and taking a step back. "But when we had that company dinner-" 'I hate company dinners, so much socialising.' "-You said that you were straight!"
"So? You did too, but you came out to the rest of us as pan later."
"No, I said that I was as straight as 3.1415926535. Pi? That's a curve. Look, I came out twice because no one got the first one." Yong Mun-Hee looked away and grumbled. "No one ever gets the math ones..."
'Should I be concerned that I understood that one? I almost laughed- HEY, WHY ARE THEY GETTING CLOSER! DO I HIDE OR SHOW MYSELF? HIDE OR SHOW?!'
Eom Mi-Hi giggled, slowly getting less red and stepping closer. "Of course you would come out with a math pun. How so very you." Yong Mun-Hee stared her down and she stopped. "Yeah okay, I lied. I wasn't brave enough to come out to everyone yet – I just knew that I liked you. I just didn't want you to hate me. But when you came out, I felt that, maybe I had a chance."
"Then why did you tease me? Make fun of me? Don't you remember?" Yong Mun-Hee lashed out dryly, putting up more walls and protecting her heart. 'Oh brother, let me guess she was jealous, a tsundere, or even a kitikudere. I hate these types of plots...'
Kim Rok Soo had attempted to get through to the door without interrupting their little confessions, but it was difficult since they kept moving around and when he did reach the door, it was locked. He really didn't want to confront them, and he was sick of crawling around. It was difficult to ignore them when they randomly cried out, so he just resigned to his fate. He tried his best to ignore them, but it was not easy. When they weren't paying much attention, so he took out his lunch from the fridge, took out his chopsticks and started to eat. 'I'm on break anyways, so there's nothing stopping me.'
"I knew I was in love with you, but I didn't know how to show it. I liked teasing you since you showed a wide array of emotions for me to fall for over and over again. I didn't realise I was hurting you since you never said anything. And I never made fun of you!"
'Oh no, it's worse than I thought. SHE'S OBLIVIOUS. And why are you blaming her? Don't you know the struggles of wanting to tell someone something but the fear of them leaving you because they thought you were lying or seeking attention? ...Why am I so into this relationship?'
"Yeah? Then why did your group always try to push me around? They pinned me up against the bathroom wall and told me to stop trying to take away your 'precious Ja Kyung'. That I was 'too ugly' for 'his tastes' anyways, so I should just give up."
'When will this K-Drama plot end? God this is hard to watch. Just start dating already. Or at the very least stop blocking the door so I can get out! I suddenly understand why Jung Soo, Soo Hyuk and Min Ah get so pressed watching these- Oh, the kimchi is really strong and spicy, it's good, I'll have more for dinner-'
"'Try to'? And they were just looking out for me since I told them that I liked him as a cover. I liked you but I didn't want them to know yet."
"You just love to lie, huh? And yeah, 'try to'. Because I scared them off, I was trying to get into Team Leader Kim's group before this, remember?" She recalled playfully, seeming to no longer be mad.
'...Why did she mention me?! It's probably a different Kim. And what's that got to do with anything? She's got a good build though, and she seems to be smart. I would've let her join. But besides, it's not like they were talking about me.'
"You really think someone as cool and stoic as Team Leader Kim would let a weakling in?" Mun-Hee continued in mock-offense, as if she was protecting his reputation.
Kim Rok Soo was confused with this new information, 'If they were weak, they might bring down the team. But if they were smart, we would probably do better at keeping Min Ah and Puh Rum out of trouble. Would I let her a weakling in? Well it depends on their skill set. But they wouldn't be talking about me. Kim is a really common last name anyways. I mean there's a Kim in service department.' Kim Rok Soo ignored the fact that there weren't any teams, ergo no Team Leaders, in the service department – maybe it was going to be a new thing that they added.
"Y'know, you're super cool. It's one of the reasons I fell for you. Always being so smart and witty, and now I know that you're really strong." She stepped closer, running her hand across the taller Yong Mun-Hee's arm. As he her hand made its way up to her neck, she started to go onto her tippytoes. Yong Mun-Hee grabbed her hips, pulling the other towards her, smirking. Then she brought her other hand up and closed her eyes-
"OKAY, THAT'S ENOUGH." Kim Rok Soo interrupted, his face the epitome of disgust.
"T-TEAM LEADER KIM?!" Yong Mun-Hee gasped, as Eom Mi-Hi's face glowed a bright red.
Kim Rok Soo covered his face with one hand, holding out the other to signal them to stop. "I tried to give you the privacy you needed for this lovey-dovey confession, but you blocked the way to the door." He sighed, acting as if he was just forced to do more paperwork. "Then I tried to ignore this – whatever this is - but you called out my name. And you were about to do a Public Display of Affection which isn't allowed anyways in the company rooms. So, let me out. Then I won't tell anyone. Not even Ja Kyung, your supervisor." He turned to look at them, pulling his hand down and away from his face.
"Of course! Uhm-" Yong Mun-Hee gently pushed Eom Mi-Hi off of her, then fumbled to open the door. "Here!"
"Thanks." Kim Rok Soo put the coffee cup in the dishwasher and put his half-finished lunch back into the fridge. He licked the rice off of the chopsticks before rinsing them off and putting them away. As he walked out of that incredibly awkward situation, he attempted to block it out from his memory. "This is the worst place to do it by the way. I'd recommend Min Ah's office. She's never in there anyways." Kim Rok Soo added on, before closing the door. Then he swiped a piece of paper from the printing room nearby and wrote "UNDER RENOVATIONS!" in messy hanja. 'That should do it.' Kim Rok Soo thought as he taped his little sign onto the door. After he brushed his teeth, he went out of the bathroom and walked the corridor leading back to the cubicles, Kim Min Ah finally showed up.
"Oh, Team Leader Kim! Did I take too long? Why aren't you in the coffee room?" Kim Min Ah said, looking down the corridor. It was a curved corridor, so she couldn't quite see the door. She had a quick power walk, he noticed.
"I was in there until a worker came in and said that there were renovations to be done." Kim Rok Soo shortly replied, the lies stringing out believably.
Kim Min Ah looked at him, as if trying to figure out whether he's lying by pulling him apart with her eyes. But Kim Rok Soo was as cold, serious, and unaffected as ever. Kim Min Ah almost felt as if she was the one caught doing something wrong. She didn't like that, that was unfair. After she scrutinised him, she grabbed his wrist and pulled back towards the coffee room. 'Jesus. Was my acting really that see-through? I need to work on my lies – she always doublechecks. ...What's with this woman and pulling me by the wrist. How about a 'follow me please' for once? I'm the senior...' Kim Rok Soo thought as he followed behind. She stopped once seeing the sign on the door and gave the sign a once-over.
